    Hello ESB,

I hope you can settle a friendly little disagreement I have with another poster . . .

It came up in another thread that Wladimir K has been working on his check hook. I replied that I have never seen Wlad throw a check hook.

Another poster then provided this gif of Wlad vs Sam Peter as evidence of Wlad throwing a check hook.

I instantly said that this is NOT a check hook. It is simply a standard left hook, and then after throwing Wlad moves his upper body to evade an incoming punch and then steps back to get out of range. For the duration of the punch both feet are planted flat on the canvas and the only movement is in the upper body, meaning this is just a standard left hook.

The other poster disagreed and argued that this WAS a check hook.

I'd be interested in getting your take on this, so please vote according to your opinion.

Also please don't let your whole stance on the Wlad/Haye thing affect how you vote in this poll, as the fighter throwing the punch is actually insignificant - it's purely a thread based around technique/terminology. And PLEASE don't turn this into another Haye/Wlad slagging contest.

Of course it's a check hook.

Wlad times Peter, catches him coming in aggressive with the check hook... then immediately moves away causing Peter to hit thin air.

That's what a check hook is.

He remains at the same angle after throwing the hook. That isn't no check hook.

    THis is a check hook:

Its a standard hook. They throw simultaneously, whereas the check hook should be more evasive like Mayweathers above.

 I told you this would happen. Only the people who ONLY KNOW a check hook from Mayweather vs Hatton would think that is the only way it can be done. Mayweather throws his hook from regular position too... just quickly moves out of the way, turning to the side as he has to with his back against the ropes... and because Hatton is leaping in hard.

They are BOTH check hooks. Both catch their opponent coming in aggressive... BOTH get out of the way so their opponent hits thin air. One leaped back.. one turned to the side.... same effect.

Feet planted, left hook then moves back, not a check hook.

YOU DON'T HAVE TO PIVOT! Do you get your information from Wiki too? You only have to pivot on a check hook, if you HAVE to pivot. Which normally happens when a fighter is literally leaping in the air toward you... that way you are out of the way and they go off balance falling forward.

However, when a person isn't coming in quite as hard... and you time the same way with a check hook coming in... you can also simply lean or leap back giving the same effect as they hit nothing but thin air. If they go off balance both ways... and hit thin air both ways... and you catch them coming in aggressive both ways... what the hell does it matter if you leap back or pivot to the side to achieve this? IT DOESN'T.

No, Mayweather's is just the perfect example of a check hook, thrown in one of the biggest fights of the last ten years - so it's a commonly used example. It doesn't detract from the fact that it is not a textbook version of the punch.

If you throw a left hook and then evade a punch, that is just a standard hook followed by some good defence - doesn't make it a check hook.

By that token you could say that manny knocked Hatton down in round one with a check right hook, as he threw the hook and rolled under Hatton's own punch - but no one would do this because it's not the case.

I would bet cold hard cash that everyone voting that it isn't a check hook hasn't ever stepped foot in a boxing gym.

WTF are you talking about? Mayweather didn't even throw the textbook version of a check hook... he actually leaped away too. The textbook version is that you plant your feet... throw your hook... and pivot on your left foot as the person is sailing past you. You are supposed to swing your right foot around as your left, lead foot is planted. Mayweather didn't even do that.

Do you know why? BEACUSE HE DIDN'T HAVE TO! Just like Wlad didn't have to do that. The point is that they both got the hell out of the way.
