    From Wikipedia

In boxing, a check hook is employed to prevent aggressive boxers from lunging in. There are two parts to the check hook. The first part consists of a regular hook. The second, trickier part involves the footwork. As the opponent lunges in, the boxer should throw the hook and pivot on his left foot and swing his right foot 180 degrees around. If executed correctly, the aggressive boxer will lunge in and sail harmlessly past his opponent like a bull missing a matador. This is rarely seen in professional boxing as it requires a great disparity in skill level to execute. Floyd Mayweather, Jr. demonstrated a picture perfect example of this punch against Ricky Hatton in their 2007 encounter. Ricky Hatton was caught with the check hook as he was lunging in; Hatton continued forward as he was knocked off balance and proceeded to ram his head into the ring post as Floyd Mayweather stepped out of harm's way. When interviewed, Mayweather stated that he was taught the check hook in the Michigan amateurs.

the way i interpret the check hook, the gif you showed of Vlad is definitely not one. He simply sat down and threw a left hook then evaded Peter's followup

I can clarify that they are both indeed hooks thrown with the left hand.

:rofl First off... it's funny because I mentioned you guys get your info from Wiki.

Second... its even more funny because I already said this was the textbook version of a check hook.

third.... It's even better because Mayweather didn't even use the textbook version of a check hook. Also.. as I already stated.:rofl

Well... as the boxing noobs you all are. You have all only seen it in Mayweather vs Hatton. Which is when you all started acting knowledgable talking about check hooks all the time.:yep Without even realizing that Mayweather didn't even hit a textbook check hook.:patsch

Yes, it is a check hook. A check hook is a hook used to counter an opponent's shot. If you go with semantics, "check" means you prevent someone from landing his shot on you.

It's just great being right. I told you all of this from the beginning... however, I also told you before you started the poll that most of ESB has no idea what a check hook is.

That was the most bog standard hook I've ever seen. But I will indulge you WiddowMaker, I will now refer to every left hook as a check hook.
