One major flaw in your post.... its unlikely Leonard thought he was losing, fighters rarely do in a close war type fight, you act like Duran was beating Ray from pillar to post & SRL was unable to change due to Duran being too much for him.... Leonard almost definitely never felt that way during the fight & therefore kept trying to beat Duran down, its just that in the end Duran was a little more than up to the task.
Leonard would learn & never fight that way again !

I obviously attribute a higher ring IQ to Ray Leonard than you do. I do not believe Leonard didn't know he was losing, he was losing clearly.

A boxer said it?! Oh right, sorry I didn't realize, that is obviously concrete scientific fact then. **** the video evidence, if "Ray said it" then that's that for me.

Exactly. Only Duran's words are gospel, unfortunately.

Yawn. This kind of tit-for-tat on the subject is really boring. I never attribute much importance to anything that any boxer says on any subject.

I tend to think the Classic would believe him if Duran turned around and said he turned SSJ3 in sparring once.

Ive already answered that, Leonard never thought he was losing, he was still sure he would get to the `smaller` Duran at some point.... turns out he was wrong.

Early rds yes but Leonard had started coming into the fight & bagging his own share of rds long before a drastic switch was required so he stuck with it likely thinking that Roberto had had his time in the sun & this was Leonard`s time to take over being the naturally bigger man, Duran proved he was strong enough to hang with him tho & those early rds proved the difference in the scoring.

Those 3 may or may not be considered ATGs-depends on whom you're talking to-but certainly were great fighters. So what Duran fought at 154 in 1978.That doesn't prove he wasn't overweight for that fight, all it proves is that he fought at 154.If you're going to say that Duran was prime when he fought Benitez, you're obviously incorrect. And my point is that you always make excuses for Leonard "not fighting his fight" against Duran in the 1st dance, when in actuality, that's exactly what transpired.

I'll never understand your Duran issue.

I attribute a higher level of ring IQ to Ray than you do. I don't think there's any way a fighter as cerebral as he was did not know he was losing. JMHO.

Scoring Hagler/Duran in his favour? Saying Duran's performance in that fight was more impressive than Leonard's, who actually beat Hagler? People failing to acknowledge Duran/Leonard I was a close, two way battle? The inordinate amount of excuses attached to his losses that are actually given credence? I like Duran, especially his Barkley effort, but the man does receive special treatment. It's irrefutable. "Leonard has these people too". Not nearly as many, not nearly as much.
