    think?
i don't think you understand the concept of "GWH".

Sergio Martinez is white, but in an era were a significant number of champions and belt holders are white, i don't think we "need" a GWH....ogh and then there are those 2 giant brothers who absolutely dominate the HW division.

GWH??...**** this isn't the beginning of 20th century, where JJ fights only middleweights and journeymen bums.

I am waiting for a great black hope! Those evil icy pale *******s from Europe are not giving our American fighters a chance. And in the lighter weights, that little f'r Pacman burned a hole through Mexico and has made our hero PBF look like a f'ing chicken ****.

It isn't looking good. Where is our hope?

As far as Serg, he is a European. Europeans are "white". Yes, a lot of them do tan which is what he does. Do you have to be an albino to be white?

Dude, is that the standard then? Folks have to be of the same complexion of the English or Germans, two of the ligthest of the light, to be considered white?? :rofl

By that definition, Italians and Greeks would not be considered white. Spaniards are white, dude. Despite the nonsense of some who think every Spaniard has Moor blood, DNA testing revealing that very few in fact have a heritage in common with the peoples of Northern Africa.

Pau and Sergio are both white, just Prince William and I are both white. But you know what? None of us have the exact same skin tone.

I guess, by your logic, Andre Ward is not really black because he's not as dark as Samuel Peter.

Bottom line: Sergio is not of native blood.

Yup. Unlike most South American nations, Argentina has very small indigenous poplation.

This may be the best post on the thread.

There's a pic someone put up not too long ago with his uncle. Sergio is white, no one questioning that, but he's a latino white, not a GWH. I guess he's more of a GWLH, Great White Latino Hope is the more proper term.:D

I don't consider Martinez a "great white hope," nor am I looking for one. Incidentally, the HW division has been dominated by two white fighters for years, and white fighters like Bute and Froch are recognized with the very best in their respective divisions.

Indeed, I am not really even a Sergio Martinez fan. I like him alright, but I am scarcely trying to "claim" him or anything else.

Rather, I am simply responding to the bull**** I read from many of the Hispanic posters on here and elsewhere that are determined to state the man is not white.

That makes me ask: why the **** is that?

I have no quarrel stating that my favorite fighter, Roberto Duran, is not white (I am infinitely more a fan of Roberto than I am Sergio).

Why can't you and others on here admit that Sergio is white?

    LOL

That's fine, dude. I have no quarrel with that. Again, I am not even a huge Sergio fan; that's the irony of all of this.

Let me ask you something, since you seem to be one of the more rational and level-headed posters within this thread (and I ask with all seriousness):

One poster pointed out that Spanish fighters, ie those from Spain, are never considered amongst the great Latino fighters. Why is that? And wouldn't that reinforce the claim that folks from Spain are not Latino?

I am interested in your thoughts on that as you seem to be an intelligent, reasonably minded poster.

Hey Hoops i now your probably referiing to me.. Just cause someone disagrees with you and has a differnet opinon on who is Latino, doesnt mean there being irrational.. I here where your coming from... But it looks like some of the whites and almost all of the Latinos have a difference of opinion on who is or isnt Latino.... Dont think to many people here are budging on this one. Just know that if the Ring Magazine or any major publication were to make a best latino fighters list and best white fighters list ... Martinez would most certainly be on The Latino list..

On Spain well there really hasnt been to many outstanding Spanish fighters and probably the best fighters to come from there wouldnt even make a top 100 list of Latino fighters, so when talking about Great latino fighters its never even been brought up. Pedro Carrasco , Javier Castallejo were solid fighters and titlist but never close to being great or Hall of famers... I always wondered why Spain hasnt prouduced that many top fighters.....

One other note Pau Gasol of the LA lakers is considered a major figure in the Latino community here,, Does numerous Mexican paper interviews, Appearences at Predominately Mex/Amer schools and causes in the Latino community..... I agree he looks 100%white (unlike Martinez) but he seems to identify most with the Mexican and Latino community here.
