He just beat Peter to the punch. If that's a check hook then every time one fighter beats another to the punch it's a check hook.

I thought you had to avoid and counter the other fighters punch whilst he's off balance/guard is down for it to be a check hook.

because from that gif I don't see that Peter was lunging it. It just looks like they traded left hooks, and that Wlad got his in while Peter missed.
