I think this is what Kellerman referred to as a check hook.

This is a boxing community. Shaunster101 asked a question about a punsh. He has now recieved answers that clears it out. As much as ESB is the community we all love to hate, Shaunster101:s behaviour actually makes decent sense :good

But you don't. You just joined for the chance to flame on a bit :hi:

I'll put the whole 2 minutes up from either side of when he says Gamboa threw a check hook then you can point it out to us.

    :good

Of course it is a check hook. I don't even see why there is a debate. It may not look as flashy as when a 130 pounds guy does it, but it's always like that with heavyweights.

Sorry, you were right before. I didn't even watch the first video. I just saw it was the 3rd round in the first vid, and for some reason I was thinking it happened in the second round.:good

If you notice... Gamboa simply threw a left hook with his feet planted, and dipped his head away from the big overhand right that was coming in aggressively with. He did even less to move away afterward than Wlad did, and certainly didn't pivot or throw in motion.

It's so funny that this happened last night. It's like Gamboa and the HBO crew knew that I was correct... and wanted to put this example out there to prove my point for everyone.

What's the definition of a 'check hook'? Who first coined the phrase?

That's what I'd like to know.

I'd call Wlad's shot a check hook. Peter went to throw a left hook and Wlad countered, timing him with his own left hook.

I can't even think of another shot like the one Floyd threw so if that's the definition of a check hook they're a very rare thing.

a check hook is a hook thrown while back-pedalling and side-stepping an on-rushing opponent. it is therefore not a powerful punch per se since it is thrown while not sitting down on it.

however, the hook does become more effective and powerful than it really is since it uses the opponent's forward momentum in the wrong direction as well as his being off-balanced against him.

hmm... so what is your definition of it? i think it's more of a defensive punch thrown while avoiding an on-rushing opponent.

backpedal, pivot to the side, throw the hook while the opponent is off-balanced and his momentum taking him in the wrong direction. the opponent can fall flat on his face and it's more a result of his being off-balanced and his forward momentum rather than the power of the punch itself.

This is one funny argument about check hooks. I am not going to pretend to know what a text book check hook is but guess what I did know. I knew who is going to argue for and against that punch being a check hook even before anyone stared posting. Usual Klitchko critics say its not a check hook and usual Klitchko supporters say it is. Why I think it is funny? Because I see both sides trying to convince each other but I already know people here are to stubborn to admit they are wrong so this argument is going nowhere.
