I think too much is made of Cooper's efforts vs. Ali. Yes, Cooper hurt and dropped Ali.... you could even say he came close to stopping him in the first fight... but he didn't. Ali beat the crap out of Cooper twice but Cooper did have a few good moments. The results? Ali TKO5 ('63) and Ali TKO6 ('66).

Had Cooper stopped Ali in the 4th round of their first fight, Cooper would have most likely faced Liston for the title. I think Liston would have stopped him inside of 5. Maybe Ali and Cooper would have met again ('64 or '65) and Ali would put a serious pounding on him like he did in '63 and '66? Ali beats Liston twice and things happen just as we remember them. Maybe a rubber match with Cooper gets squeezed in somewhere but Cooper doesn't make it past the 4th round if it does.
