Its difficult to see Benn winning by KO in this fight. Calzaghe was never KO'ed in his career. This doesnt mean Benn cant do it, just doubt it would happen. I'd take Calzaghe by decision or late stoppage. Joe often got better as a fight went on. I think Benns got tired late in a few fights, an accumulation of punches can stop it. Benns chin was also suspect. Im not the biggest fan of either fighter.
Benn was a very good SMW, but Calzaghe was the best ever. Prime for Prime Calzaghe would beat Benn by KO, and just consider Benn at the end of his career also, how Collins walked threw him. Benn has openly said he thinks if Calzaghe had of been around he would have beaten them all
2 of my favourite fighters, i watched benn from when he 1st started and he was absoloute dinamite, he basically went in the ring for a tear up and wanted the fight over as soon as possible. early in his career, benn never paced himself and he learn't the hard way that you can't knock everyone out within 3 rounds, by getting stopped off both watson and eubank. think benn gassed out in those fights just as much as getting stopped though his face was a mess in both. benn learn't his lesson on that front and paced himself much better in eubank 2 and mcclellan. that was benns peak in my eyes because he was more of a complete fighter than pure knock out artist. after mcllellan, benn was never the same fighter, it took so much out of him, i certainly wouldn't pay any attention to his performances against collins. prime for prime v calzaghe, i just don't know. joe is a very durable fighter, he hangs in there and can fight in adversity and adapt during fights like very few fighters have ever been able to do. if calaghe fought the early benn of watson and eubank 1 then i think he may knock calzaghe down early but end up getting stopped by calzaghe around the 9 or 10 round mark. against the more mature benn, i think it would go to points and i think it would be an absoloutely brilliant fight - i'd lean towards calzaghe by a very close points decision but there is no great certainty in that for me. i would proper love to have seen this fight though.
Prime Joe Calzaghe matches up well with prime Nigel Benn and wins on points or late stoppage. It's an easy prediction for me.
Really :yikes How'd he manage that? When you consider that Byrd beat Vitali Klitschko and took monumental punishment from Wlad.
Calzaghe adapts. Benn...........not so much. Calzaghe just has more ways to win. He wins 10 times out of 10. I just cannot see Nigel winning this.
:huh you think he looked excellent in the collins fights ? he was a shot to bits fighter at that point. he didn't look excellent, he looked like ****.
:yikes you had eubank winning the fight after eight rounds against calzaghe ? what the **** are you on ?
Calzaghe knocked Eubank down in the 1st. Eubank definitely landed some good shots, and had his moments. But Calzaghe clearly, clearly won that fight. And was well ahead after 8 rounds.
tell me about it. this guy can't score a fight to save his life if he had eubank ahead after eight. he also says that benn looked excellent in the collins fights. the mind boggles.:yep
Judge Paul Thomas had it about right... 116-111 for Calzaghe, and looking at his card he scored it the same as me apart from R2 even.
