Foreman, overall. Shavers' power in his right, was about the same as Foreman's but George could hit just as hard with the left, while Earnie could n't.

I think they hit differently, Like in electrical terms you have "Dirty" Power and "Clean" Power - Foreman was industrial dirty power, Smashing, Bashing Busting And Thumping...
Shavers was Clean Power "Bang" and your out of it. - It seems to me that Foreman incorporates his great strengh with his punches, whereas Shavers used Speed, catching people "Out of the Blue" like Ellis, Holmes, or when he Dropped Lyle, of course the follow up was vital, when Foreman had wounded prey he kept punches coming, and usually finshed it off, Ernie was a bit more erratic in his follow-up, Also George was much more of an intimidator than Earnie so may of had a little advantage with nervous opporsiton ?

I think the Dirty - Clean Power theme runs elsewhere, John Mugabi was Dirty Power, Julien Jackson was Clean Power, Bob Foster Clean, Saad Muhammed Dirty,

But they can both be shocking if you are caught on the end of it.

Good post. Very apt description of both men.

Shavers right hand is universally considered by many fighters to be the hardest punch in heavyweight history. Foreman's right hand is not that far behind, but what sets George apart from Shavers is his left hand and jab overall. Shavers didn't hit as hard with his left hand like Foreman did throughout his entire career. Foreman, could knock you backwards with his jab.

Stevie G - I do wonder if Smoking Joe would of Got up 6 times and still be Standing if Earnie had caught him right ? Having said that, he may of come back to Stun Earnie...There was never going to be any way back Againt George (Notwithtandin - The Ref allowing George to Repeatedly Push Joe off. )

I've said repeatedly that Earnie's left hook was not to be overlooked. He decked Young and Lyle with it, and initially stunned Norton with one. Cosell didn't sell it short either.

Did any common opponent say George hit harder? (It's rather surprising how few common opponents they had.) Lyle, Ali, Norton, Young (who was only ever floored by the Acorn) and Leroy Caldwell were all in agreement that Shavers was superior in this department. Big Ron took on Shavers and Foreman in legendary back to back wars. Nobody questions that Foreman had the better delivery system, and was a more proficient finisher. But there's a vote of at least 5-0 in favor of Earnie's power among peer adversaries. How much more direct comparison is necessary? Maybe it's like Cobb said after stopping the Destroyer.

    Reporter:
    "Tex, does Shavers hit hard?"
    Cobb:
"I wish I could give you an intimate knowledge of that!" (No wonder Johnny Carson liked having him as a guest.)

"Clean" power, or "dirty" power doesn't seem to have been a qualifier with Ron, Muhammad, Ken, Jimmy or Leroy. They were all unequivocal in their opinions.

Foreman clearly made better use of the jab, but the way Earnie used his to close Henry Clark's eye in their first match offers some tantalizing clues as to what he might have done if he utilized it more. Shavers had an 80 inch reach, quite long for a man standing 72 inches tall. (If there's footage of Shavers-Clark I, that would make for very interesting viewing. Henry was a talented 6'3" veteran stylist on a nine bout undefeated streak. According to what Jerry Quarry described, this could be Earnie's finest decision win, and maybe the one time his jab got his arm raised after the final bell. Shavers-Rondon would also be intriguing to watch. These are not opponents Earnie would be expected to outpoint.)

  8. wrong .
Ali did take moar flush punches then sahvers then foreman .
it is fact, 74 ali wud dispose,
of shavers easy w/out taking many ,
it is y ali says shavers is hardest, bc he took moar flush pawnches then,
    against other opponents.

It would be (or would've been) interesting to have these two hit some kind of measuring ergometer to see who hit harder with both the left and the right hand. all I can say is I wouldn't want to be hit flush by either one of these two. It's probably too close to call.

    Shavers almost certainly hit harder.

There are too many common opponents who say this to dismis them all.

In terms of who was the better fighter and better puncher, obviously Foreman takes that.

Ali had slipped a lot between the Foreman and Shavers fights. Imo,his decline between 1974-77 was bigger than his decline from 1967-74 !
