My main sparring partner (and a few others I've come up against) likes to use this a lot to come over my jab or occasionally my left. I'm a southpaw and he packs a wallop so I'm pretty weary of this punch. I keep my left at my chin or raise it a little to catch it but I'm trying to think what the best counterpunch would be. Slip outside and throw a left uppercut?

It depends on you, if your feet are fast enough id say stand right at his punching range and try to bait the punch in. when he throws it take a quick step to your right (away from the punch) and if he fully committed to the over hand punch he should be off balance and in a perfect spot for a southpaw power uppercut.
Try to move to your right as laterally as possible if you move out to much you could put yourself out of punching range. also keep you right hand up, if your opponent is clever enough he'll try to faint the right hand and walk you into a left hook.
The best way to make some one stop throwing a certain punch is to make him miss and make him pay, but like i said how you make him miss depends on your body's ability.

Thanks, for the most part I've just tried timing it and landing a stiff jab while raising my left to catch it(okay results) or slipping/moving outside to my left but I find I'm not in a great position to counter from there. I have pretty good movement for a guy my size but my better attribute is timing.

Id also say to be aware of the punch, not cautious of it. If your sparring with your mind set on avoiding the punch you could miss opportunities and will avoid taking risks. keep his power in the back of your mind but fight your fight try different things and most importantly stay relaxed.

No doubt, I've gotten much better at staying calm namely because I regulate my breathing a thousand times better than when I first started. The overhand right is the punch I get tagged with the most I think, not entirely sure why. I have a nice reach advantage so I can keep him at bay if he (or most others) try a jab or straight right, but it's the explosive lunge that gets me. A lot like the first 2 and a half minutes of Vitali/Solis really only I'm a lefty.

Feint a jab so he throws the overhand, take a small step back and left hook over it.

  7. Circle away from it or take a half step back and move in.

Slip to your left, left rip or right to the body.

Or use left arm for cover and push the punch out then see if you can counter with a straight right on in the inside or stiff jab.

    I agree,
I love using this punch and alot of time when people feint the jab usually throw the overhand and get countered

I should've mentioned I've used feints on him to good effect, including getting him to throw the overhand right. I've then moved out of the way or blocked it, I'm just looking for a good counter to make him pay.

you could also step to the right with your left hand over your head (just in case) and land a right hook, thats if you have a good one, if your not quick enough to step to the right and making him miss the right then keeping your left hand over you head to block it would take alot of power and steam of his right especially if you've already stepped to the right he might land it but not the the exact desired spot, trust me this will take away alot of power and if landing that right hook would give him second thoughts...

but if you wish to counter effectively with your naturally stronger hand then the left uppercut might be pretty good, although i considered the right hook since its closer to his body/head anyway you've be more likely to land it...

Check hook. Look to land it as he pulls back for the overhand right there will be a space to land the left hook.

Perfect strategy, I'd say. If he's looking to counter the jab, then fake it. As soon as your left foot lands when you step back, blast the hook through your target. That overhand right will leave him vastly exposed.

I'd say that's a perfect time to give him your left uppercut to the body Bute-style...Just whip it out there the second you see him throwing that overhand.

Maybe have to eat the punch, or you could do it stepping toward them to smother the punch.

Basic fundamentals say the right counters the right-

Where's his left hand? not on his chin i'll bet.

Where's his center of gravity? On the front foot i'll bet.

The right counters the right and the left counters the left.
