for the losses to leonard and hagler. do they carry any weight with you. the exucuse about the leonard fight doesnt carry much cos he was winning comfortably The execuse about the massage for the hagler fight. i dont know. he just fought da wrong fight imo
In retrospect it was the wrong fight, at the time Hearns was the more brutal puncher who had just dispatched the Duran who went a compeitive 15 with Hagler in 2 rounds. Hearns was moving up to 160 but it was probably seen as an ideal weight and he was in his prime, Hagler was never considered that much of a brutal puncher was slower and jumping on him early probably made sense as fighting an out fight and standing off him may see Hearns fade down the stretch and get caught. Hindsight is 50-50 however
yeah, i don't think people fully realised how good hagler's chin was either. he took some real bombs in that fight, and the mugabi fight too. hearns thought he could get hagler out of there like he got duran out of there. at the time i don't think this was that unreasonable.
In the end, a lot of things contributed but the broken right hand doomed Hearns in the Hagler fight. He was determined, whether through a fight or a boxing match, to put his right hand through Haglers head, and once it busted on the great bald dome, there was no way Hearns was gonna win. It was just a matter of time. Leg massage, malaria, whatever, Hearns own hand made that fight unwinnable that night. Leonard beats the same version of Tommy that showed that night 10 of 10 times because he made the most of his moments. He didn't waste his punches: Everything he threw was hard, sharp, and thrown with ill intent. When he connected and did enough damage to enable him to follow up with more, he focused on Hearns ribcage. Leonard's body punching won him the fight that night: Its a revelation. Right before the referee pulls him off Tommy, he about folds him in half with a brutal left hook to the ribs. Tommy boxed, but he was outgeneraled that night. Leonard did have as many moments as Tommy did, but when it came time to do damage, Sugar milked his precious seconds of advantage dry. Manny's excuses are even more comical and I try to pretend he never made them. Socks? Please.
How so? It is common knowledge that a massage puts the muscles into a relaxed state and as Manny puts it "makes you spent".
Hearns wasn't winning that comfortably. Although he was ahead on points he was seriously rocked several times in that fight and there are several stretches where Leonard is teeing off on Hearns, and if I remember correctly Leonard was robbed of a KD in one of those rounds. I think people need to rewatch that fight. It wasn't much of a surprise when Leonard got the KO because he came close to getting it several times.
Just rewatched the fight now. I don't think he was robbed of a KD, Hearns had no legs but was bundled through the ropes rather than knocked down. Leonard had Hearns wobbly a couple of times but going into the 13th I had it 117-111 and Hearns had been looking pretty comfortable for the last few rounds. It was his fight to lose. All he had to do was box a bit and keep his guard up and he'd have won. A bit of a sloppy way to lose a fight from Hearns. Great fight though.
I am one of the biggest fans of Tommy,so maybe I should not comment here. The too light in weight thing for Leonard was legit. He came in 145.. Tommy overtrained, but I never really felt it took away from Ray's win. Ray was more experienced than Tommy that night and was very determined. As for Hagler. I am not sure. I want to be fair. My honest thinking is Tommy is an ATG and beat more greats than most greats did, but in the Hagler fight the message excuses whether legit or not should not matter. If Manny says a massage weakens the muscles he should not have had that guy in the room to massage Tommy. Where was Manny?I think that was the time when Tommy got a big entourage to follow him around, so it is possible he had guys who wanted to please him and do anything for him like a massage, but it doesn't matter. Marvin won fair and square. Why was the guy allowed to massage him is the biggest question. I think it happened, but not a big issue- I do not buy the excuse since I do not like excuses. A guy signs to fight, he signs to fight regardless of anything. Marvin won. Tommy put on a great fight and I think even in a loss came out a winner. Both Marvin and Tommy fought recklessly, and the more natural middleweight won. That is all which can be said. It really did not prove who the better fighter was as much as who benefitted from fighting a brawl. But the truth is it doesn't matter what excuses they had. Tommy lost both fights legit. Excuses are just that. A better excuse was the right hand breaking, but still that happened because Marvin fought his fight and Tommy had to throw awkward punches at the beginning of round one. I always thought if you compare Marvin's resume to Tommy's, Tommy is greater. More greats and more spectacular wins. More iconic was Tommy. Marvin benefitted from greats moving up in weight.
Hearns was never known for having strong legs or a granite chin. Hagler just out-beasted him. They both went for the early kill, and Hagler came out on top. Leonard and Hagler were just better fighters on the night than Thomas Hearns. No need for excuses.
