Lopez looked awful in the first fight. None of his usual sharpness. Much better in the rematch, I thought. I haven't seen either in a while, though

I think that was specifically because he was being crowded and hounded in a new and strange way and didn't get a chance to get into his rhythm because of his cut rather than any past-prime shenanigans.

Alvarez II is the first time he faced real adversity (cuts) and boxed well immediatly afterwards. I've seen the fights recently, but i'm pretty drunk.

    Buster Drayton vs Carlos Santos

I decided to watch some Drayton fights after some recent threads got me thinking about him, but could only locate a couple. This one had gone unseen for many years and wasn't at all fresh in the memory; i've got to say after watching a great fight i was left more impressed with Santos.

He's not a fighter i'm a fan of due to some rather cowardly performances(Curry, Benitez) and a tendency towards low-output safety-first running. However here he put things together, fought his heart out and while i didn't score the fight, could well have deserved the decision.Close fight though, with some tough rounds to judge.

For anyone not familiar with him, he's a stylist in the broad Rodriguez\Laguna\Marcel mold.Always employing lots of bouncey lateral\in-out movement with a decent jab and sound combinations to work with offensively. He's not in the class of those men for sheer ability though, and is probably more comparable to fellow countryman Bantam Julian Solis there.

He didn't do anything too fancy here, but was far more determined and had the balance between mobile boxing and offensive output i had previously saw him often lacking. He showed Great Stamina to move well multi-directionally for 15 rounds, a solid busy jab, good bodypunching and the grit to initiate and always try and have the last word in exchanges.Basically being busier and more consistent than the enigmatic Drayton.

Drayton for his part, is always an unusual difficult fighter to figure out.A guy with some really good tools, athleticism, a totally relaxed natural ring demeanour and a lot of power; he was also often a sluggish, inactive go through the motions fighter who never seemed too bothered about losing.a sparring partner mentality that made sense considering that was arguably his main line of work during his early pro career as a short notice journeyman.

Stylistically a crafty trap-setter in the Archie Moore mold, he was naturally well-balanced but not the most mobile fighter, nor the most disciplined with his footwork.Defensively very varied...he would often keep a very low left to bait fighters and use subtle slick upperbody moves to avoid punches and counter, or opt to go into a Quartey-esque shell and wait his turn.Lots of good moves, yet just as lazy with them which tended to see him look good in spurts, before getting more for a couple of round with shots he should avoid.

Offensively his main weapon was definitely a great powerful educated right hand, imo one of the best of any notable jr middle.Usually thrown as a heavy counter, or in explosive clusters of looping overhand rights that often threw him off balance, but were deadly. He had all the available punches at all ranges with the right. Not much of a dedicated jabber, though his left hooks were good, if used sparingly in comparison to the overhand.Good combinations.

This fight showed off both the good and bad traits he possessed, in almost equal measure. He always looked the stronger of the two and generally landed the bigger punches, some of which had santos in trouble a few times. When he kept the workrate up and stayed disciplined defensively he was the more talented fighter. However too often he was simply inactive and lazy defensively or looking for one or two big counters while being outworked in the exchanges.Even when Santos faded late, he was still throwing at least as many punches and just seemed to want it more.

Both fighters on this form would acquit themselves well against most jr middles.Drayton got old and faded not too long after finally winning a belt, but like Freddie little would be a great darkhorse type to trouble a lot of more highly regarded fighters than himself.IF you're hittable and come to pressure and fight, he's the type of fighter who could really cause upsets if he feels like fighting, but could always be potentially outworked.

I recall my late father describing a Santos fight to me that I had missed. It was a very good if not great fight. I think I have it narrowed down to Buster Drayton or Mark Medal. You used the word great in describing this one. Was it better than Drayton - Medal?

Probably Santos vs Medal. That was a great fight with a few knockdowns which seemed to signify the change in mentality and improvement as a fighter for Santos.

Pretty close to my own scorecard here.

    Mando:1,2,3,4,5,8,10
    Sugar: 6,7,9
    Total: 97-93 Mando (7-3)

I really like both fighters in here and it is a great fight. Mando looks superbly sharp in this with his beautiful offence in full flow, sliding into new angles, letting long well placed shots slot in between Sugar's defenses and leading on to deft combinations.

Sugar always impresses me with his smarts, for being such a physical beast (at Featherweight) he is really clever and crafty and reminds me of Archie Moore.

Also does anyone else feel this fight is a bit like Mando's fight with Laguna, with Mando occupying the role of Laguna? In an odd irony.

I disagree here. I think Arguello rightfully won this fight, although it is close and a great fight.

The major swing rounds are the 6th where it could go 10-8 to Ramirez and the first which could be even, but even then Arguello would still win it on my card.

Ramirez has a good strategy here, basically letting Arguello come forward and then countering and he does well early. But to me it feels like because it is a ten-rounder Arguello pushes himself to a higher pace and he makes himself feel uncomfortable, however, by the end of it Arguello becomes more relaxed in the pace and looks less forced and takes command.

Have to disagree with this card a good bit. This is the only one of yours I, out and out disagree with. (Actually having looked through them all there is a good few we see almost exactly the same Spinks vs Qawi being one)

    My card

    Canzoneri: 4,5,7,8,9,10,12,15
    Chocolate: 1,2,3,6,11,13,14
    Total: 143-141 Canzoneri (8-7)

I've scored it twice before and had it 8-7 either way. I genuinely see it as a dead even match up.

    Lewis Vs Holyfield 1

    Round 1 - 10-9 Lewis
    Round 2 - 10-9 Lewis (20-18 Lewis)
    Round 3 - 10-9 Holyfield (29-28 Lewis)
    Round 4 - 10-9 Holyfield (38-38 Draw)
    Round 5 - 10-9 Lewis (48-47 Lewis)
    Round 6 - 10-9 Lewis (58-56 Lewis)
    Round 7 - 10-9 Lewis (68-65 Lewis)
    Round 8 - 10-9 Lewis (78-74 Lewis)
    Round 9 - 10-10 Even (88-84 Lewis)
    Round 10 - 10-9 Holyfield (97-94 Lewis)
    Round 11 - 10-9 Holyfield (106-104 Lewis)
    Round 12 - 10-9 Lewis (116-113 Lewis)

Good fight, had Lewis the winner, but I think if he fought more aggressively, the judges would have had him the winner too :bbb

Sugar would have had a great fight with the Professor. Both are subtly skilful despite their explicit physical prowess. Who do you like in that one?

For what it's worth, the first time I scored it I had it for Arguello by a couple of points. In my opinion there wasn't much separating them. Arguello's class was starting to show itself as the fight wore on, but Ramirez hung in there and has at least as good an argument for beating Arguello as Vilomar Fernandez does.

I'm willing to go back and watch this fight again some time soon, it really was an entertaining battle. I tended to favour Canzoneri's body work over Chocolate's work upstairs, but the rounds were all pretty competitive so I can see how someone can have a quite different card to mine. My scoring for that fight seems pretty off beat compared to what I remember some other posters having scored it, like Pea who I believe had it close for Choc.
