His punches landed to punches taken ratio must be the best since they started counting punch stats. Mayweather is the only one who could rival him. And I think he also still owns the highest KO% of any heavyweight champ. Fans need to recognise what a great dominant boxer this guy really is.
I'm a big Vitali fan, but quality of opposition has a lot to do with it although I agree with you that Vitali is a great boxer, a natural born boxer.
I don't mean to sound like a dick, but look at the competition. He faces a top fighter like Lewis and all of a sudden he's outlanded.
and he outlanded Lewis by roughly 50%. Doesn't matter that he threw more. If anything that means he was the agressor most of the time.
Actually Vitali landed more than 50% more punches than Lewis in their match, according to compubox...
I agree his comp was not great, but they were all contenders besides Briggs. It's amazing he's consistenly beating down all these guys and throwing a lot of punches, and with his hands down, without getting hit too much (Lewis was the only one hit him consistently and with any accuracy, and he's an ATG). I'd love for Vitali to face Valuev and Haye to see if it would be more of the same.
He's a monster, a freak. He fought everyone available to him, and handled all of them (including Lewis and Byrd). Vitali is a unique fighter who is machine-like consistent. He's going to throw between 60-70+ punches a round (a ridiculous number for a heavyweight, especially one his size), he's not going to get knocked down (or knocked out) and he almost always knocks people out. The only variable for him in the past was would he get injured (Byrd). The Lewis cut was a fluke; he never had anything like that before or since. I've said this before and will repeat it here: The reason why Vitali would always beat Lewis, except for The Cut Lottery, is because he throws so many punches and is nearly impossible to hurt. For most guys, you can't even get to him (think Peter or Arreola). But even for the bigger guys like Briggs or Lewis, they can't really hurt Vitali. And they certainly aren't going to out-throw him. Which inevitably means a Vitali UD or, often, a late KO/TKO. Say what you want about Vitali's competition, but he took on, and bettered, several fighters who were well-regarded or feared when he fought them: * Hide (defending WBO HW Champ when Vitali fought him) * Byrd (30-1 when Vitali fought him, only loss to Ibeabuchi) * Lewis (up on the scorecards when the fight was stopped b/c of the cut) * K Johnson (34-1-1 at the time of the fight) * Sanders (crushed Wlad, avoided by Lewis) * Peter (after Vitali's long layoff) * Arreola (27-0 at the time of the fight) It's too bad that there wasn't better competition around for the Klitschkos, but Vitali has made the most of what was available. There was no need for a rematch with Byrd. Lewis didn't want a rematch. Everyone else has been pretty easily dispatched, except perhaps Sanders. The toughest fight Vitali has ever had was the bout with Sanders, and that's because Sanders landed that lightning-fast canon left hook in the first round. But, Vitali got out of that jam and ended up TKO'ing the South African. He's rarely been challenged. Off the top of my head, the only guys I can recall even making Vitali work were Sanders, Lewis and Arreola (because he kept coming forward aggressively despite getting pummeled).
Well when you barely throw punches, you better be accurate. Vitali paws alot and barely lets his hands go. Same for his brother Wlad.
