I miss Calzaghe.......

I certainly prefer Froch but I can definitely understand why people would miss Calzaghe too. He was a better boxer than anyone at 168lbs right now, including Ward, and would make the tournament even better. Not that the Super 6 needs any more talent though but if it was possible, he'd make it even better.

I think it's safe to say that he'd school Dirrell, beat Bute and Kessler again, and have very fun fights with Ward and Froch, if he was in his 'Jones' shape.

Assuming he was mentally prepared to come back and could get into good shape, I'd like to see him fight again. I don't think either of those are likely though, so it's probably a permanent retirement.

 

Was Calzaghe considered to be an "exciting" fighter by the British public?

At the end of his career, he beat Kessler, and had a close fight with Hopkins.

Both men are still fighting well in the 168 and 175 lb divisions a couple or so years after he defeated them. The former is suffering from more than one problem and beat Froch for a championship.

Shouldn't matter if he never fought people in his prime. He still fought people when his skills were fading already and he still won.

 

He was good but his report card could read should have done more i think, for example fighting dawson when he was on a bit of a roll. Im not blaming him for wanting to stay close to home for a lot of his big fights as thats what a lot of guys do but cant help wondering if he should have taken a few more risks in getting unification fights earlier, but then again this may have involved travelling to germany and possibly looking for a decision, not a good place to be

 

Not an exciting one, no. He was considered to be a 'better' boxer than most British fighters though. Even the mainstream press, who usually know little about boxing, talked up his technical abilities.

 

Like Hamed, He's a quitter and he was run off while he was ahead and before the public made him fight REAL fights where he would have definitely lost his "0" several times over.

But did British people find his style and especially his fights largely unappealing and boring?

Just wondering because I hear so much from British fight fans how boring fighters are absolutely unacceptable and I wonder how Calzaghe was able to build such a loyal home fan base?

 

Lacy was never a star here. He did nothing great in his career.
The Yanks dont like JC b/c he slaps and has very little power.

He'd make all the other fighters look **** and one dimensional

 

He was largely unknown for a long time. He was regularly booed. The British pundits never liked him, and wrote him off the majority of the time.

That was until the Lacey victory, everyone, including the pundits/British "boxing experts" jumped on the bandwagon.

 

Dawson was an HBO fighter and had a very good resume with wins over Adamek, Tarver, and Johnson.

Dawson was all wrong for old Calzaghe and would have won a decision for sure. Calzaghe knew this and retired instead of facing him, despite entertaining the idea of a match for some time.

 

His resume isn't that bad at all. B-Hops is a hell of a lot better, but Joe was definitely the best British fighter of the 00s.
