Might seem a silly question but why did some of the old school fighters hold their left arm so low and outstreched ? surely there is less to put behind the jab that way ?

how low is vitali's left, some fighters prefer to fight that way old or modern

I have to admit, I am unimpressed with Sam McVea in that film. Jack Sharkey looks very impressive though.

 

thanks, and I´m unimpressed with McVea too.....Look like a very crude fighter...

 

Certainly in the light of the recent Langford-Jeannette finding, McVea's bout with Jim Johnson looks far less impressive in comparison. McVea did hang in there in a series with Langford and Jeannette, but it seems to be mainly because of his brute strength and power than anything else.

As for Sharkey, I always found him the most impressive looking boxer of the late 20's/early 30's era of heavyweight fighters, including Schmeling. He was like a lightweight/welterweight boxer of the era fighting at heavyweight.

 

It happened a lot during those decades. And Louis was a further evolutionary leap when he came along.

 

Yeah, he had some almost Naseem looking head movement in that clip.:smoke He looked quite good, he did.

Boxing too had an evolution from the turn of the century to the 20s and a leap again culminating in the mid 30s to late 50s, carring on through to today - however we have begun de-evolution since the late 80s/90s

likewise film technology and proper use of such technology likewise kept evolving!

 

Sharkey looks great, though he seems a little overconfident of his speed and reflexes, using that upperbody movement for his defense. Small wonder he thought Ali was the second coming of... well, himself. Great footage.

 

Interesting. Dempsey looks real sloppy and dirty, real friend of the sparring partner. Also, that looks very much to be the LA Coliseum, 5 years before the Olympics were hosted there. Why is there such a huge crowd? Surely not just for a sloppy Dempsey sparring session. Was this a sort of "half time show" to a larger sporting event?
