Sonny would punish Rocky too often and too early, imo. Marciano's one advantage, stamina, would n't come into it. About the nearest thing to Foreman v Frazier.
Williams nipple pinch was better than the suzie q. I picked Liston KO, really like rocky, but i think liston, just has to much for him.
Although I could see this possibly going the way of rock/Louis, because sonny wasn't the fastest guy in the ring, I think sonny might be to much for rocky to handle, sonny was a real harass, in a foreman kind of way
I think that Liston is one fighter that even Marciano admirers tend to favour over him. Personaly I would take Liston over literaly anybody who tried to come forward against him.
Janitor, How do rate Marciano's chin? Do you think he could at least survive the 15 round limit against Liston.
It's funny how you made this thread at this time (And even quoted me) because I was watching Reznick's Liston tribute and I actually wondered if Marciano would've had a chance against this beast. My heart and head conflict each other.
You can never really say how sombodys chin would hold up against Liston untill they have fought Liston. He is one of those punchers who somtimes took somtimes anvil jawed fighters and did things that nobody ought to have been able to do to them. So, I think that Marciano could last the distance, but you just never know.
I like liston. I like marciano. The only way to prove a point though is to tear down a career. Im not going to do that. this time Im going to keep it simple. marciano was small. Liston quit.
Although Liston was old, Leotis Martin, an upgraded MW, reached Liston's jaw and knocked him out. Liston wins 8 out of 10 imo. I rank rocky higher based on resume, but this is a big ask. Liston has almost every advantage over rocky, I think liston knocks rocky out, he frustrates him with the jab and power shots for the first half, before coming in for the kill late on.
liston gets kudos for beating big men like cleveland wiliams (who satterfeild knocked out) and scared men like patterson. when you run through sonnys biggest wins it was a shorter prime than marciano had only against lesser fighters. wilams, foley, harris and patterson? Until Liston fought for the title it was tied up between a guy who beat machen quicker than he could and another guy tied to rematches he had not fought yet. I think Listons "run" was more like 1959- 1960. During this spell wiliams, folly, harris and machen were at least winning fights when liston fought them, though all had been knocked out before. These were his most worthy wins but he recorded them during the ingo-patterson triangle and its only one year. Its not quite "cleaning out" all the contenders over a number of years. The bunch of guys Liston fought earlier, ben wise, daniels, ernie cabb, mederos, whitehurst, bethea, valdez, besmanoff, howard king and wesphal were losing fights at the time Liston squashed them, each lost their previous fight coming in against liston. Even dejohn had lost 2 of his last 4 fights. This cant qualify as cleaning out a division. 1961 liston did not fight a rated guy. Then he went 2-2 in title fights (3 in one round) up until 1965. The potential was there but it was not realised. beating ingo, clay, even old man moore would at least cemented something but it just did not happen like that for sonny.
