who in the hell ever frustrated marciano with jabs? he was beaten to the punch a few times but usualy drew fighters into a fight he wanted at a range where he had the edge.

marciano was a great champion, underated BOXING skills, great crouch not as easy to hit as some think, great bodypuncher, devastating KO power, iron jaw. highest work rate for any heavyweight and great cardiovascular conditioning and HEART. marciano KOs Liston.

Listons awsome power and reputation prevented him from having that many competative fights and it hurt him. Listons record in competative fights liston was 5-4.

Marciano would be competative against anyone. He deserves that at the least.

remember johnny summerlin, neal welch, whitehurst and billy joiner and chuck wepner all went a lot of rounds with liston.

Perhaps I wasn't clear with the word frustrate. I mean that liston would control the range preventing rocky having much success. I don't for one second doubt rocky's heart or determination, I doubt his chances of success at getting beyond liston's jab.

Actually Rocky would use his 67" reach to out jab Liston with his 84" reach and generally outbox him with his speed and combination punching ... ... Continue to get such a kick from Marciano guys ..

liston gets kudos for beating big men like cleveland wiliams (who satterfeild knocked out) and scared men like patterson. when you run through sonnys biggest wins it was a shorter prime than marciano had only against lesser fighters. wilams, foley, harris and patterson?

Until Liston fought for the title it was tied up between a guy who beat machen quicker than he could and another guy tied to rematches he had not fought yet.

I think Listons "run" was more like 1959- 1960. During this spell wiliams, folly, harris and machen were at least winning fights when liston fought them, though all had been knocked out before. These were his most worthy wins but he recorded them during the ingo-patterson triangle and its only one year.

Its not quite "cleaning out" all the contenders over a number of years.

The bunch of guys Liston fought earlier, ben wise, daniels, ernie cabb, mederos, whitehurst, bethea, valdez, besmanoff, howard king and wesphal were losing fights at the time Liston squashed them, each lost their previous fight coming in against liston. Even dejohn had lost 2 of his last 4 fights. This cant qualify as cleaning out a division.

1961 liston did not fight a rated guy. Then he went 2-2 in title fights (3 in one round) up until 1965.

The potential was there but it was not realised. beating ingo, clay, even old man moore would at least cemented something but it just did not happen like that for sonny .....yet still he is given such chances against proven ATG's..

    Now Chokelab,

Listons wins over Williams 2x, Patterson, Machen, Folley are very impressive. His wins over Valdes, Harris, Bethea were dominating.

I think that was a good win too but valdes was coming off a loss and in his final year as a pro. Ninos record at that time was not that of a contender on the way up. machen had already ended his chances as a top fighter knocking him out 3 years earlier, at the time liston fought valdes hed lost 8 times since hed been marcianos #1 contender way back when.
valdes actualy was beaten up by a young alonzo johnson in his last bout before taking on LIston, losing on points and a fight but one before was up and down like a yoyo before geting KO'd by 19-3-2 charlie powel who I think was really a football player in the NFL that took up boxing to become a journeyman.
Its still a good win for liston but valdes was prety much on the skids then.

agreed but its not cleaning out a division. Patterson, machen and folley had ALL been beaten just as impresively by other fighters.

Marciano out guts Sonny in this fight....if Ali could shake Liston...whats Sonny going to do against Marciano? Liston had the bully mentality..like Tyson...stand up to him...hit him back....and the fights over.

As champion Liston QUIT WHILE SITTING ON HIS STOOL against Ali in Miami in 1964....and took a dive up in Maine in 1965...Marciano had his nose split open DOWN TO THE BONE against Charles in the second fight in Sept.1954...and begged the ref not to stop the fight...
