Sorry for starting a new thread in this and bringing up the same topic but I've read from a guy in general forum that apparently a guy and his buddy were claiming to have seen Greb-Walker in 1978 and that the film was in "bad shape". I asked the poster for more and got this:

"It was an Amazon book review on the new Harry Greb book (fearless harry greb?) where people could post comments. The guy said he knew the Greb/Walker fight existed because he and a friend saw the fight in 1978, but the quality of the film was poor. His name was Craig Long and he said he was searching for the fight. Burt Bienstock posted on the thread and tried to correspond with him."

Anyone heard of craig long or tried to contact him for some info on the greb-walker bout? just thought id share seeing as theres lots of people who want this film and getting views from a guy who cliams to have seen it iays something. I also know theres posters here who try any lead they can to get ahold of some link to a greb film so dunno how helpful it is but thought it would be interesting to those posters.

    That link ^ isn't working.

Yes, someone named "Craig Long" posted on one of my Harry Greb articles -either "Where Have You Gone, Harry Greb?" or "The God of War" I don't recall which one. I saw it and posted a reply to his post asking him for details and to contact me, but never heard back. I was prepared to quit my job, grab a duster and a gun and take no prisoners to get that film.

The Sweet Science.com has revamped the site and not only screwed up the text and lost all the graphics, they have erased all the posts after each article.

From what I remember Craig Long's first part of his post extolled Harry Greb's skills and achievements. He then went on to state emphatically that one day Harry Greb's greatness would be manifest for all to see, and related how he and a friend saw the Greb/Walker fight in 1978. He said it was difficult to see if the punches landed due to the quality of the film, but he was confident it would turn up one day and Greb's greatness would be vindicated.

"Have you attempted to retrieve the initial reply from the 'Cache' function which can show old webpages, or there's the dedicated website for preserving past websites? "

I tried the cache, no luck. What's this website you speak of?

It would be interesting to see where this guy has seen the film. maybe Stonehands can check the cache to see if his post is still there.

I tried unsuccessfully searching for Craig Long on the internet, thinking a boxing aficionado in 1978 watching that fight would have to be someone with a deep interest in the sport who had access to someone who was willing to show the film to him. Obviously in 1978 with no internet access and vcrs still relatively new, the owner of that footage would have probably been an avid film collector, with a large collection and possibly well known to Cayton and other collectors. If we take him at his word, the fact that he watched the film with a friend gives me hope that at least a few boxing fans in an inner circle from that era may have been privileged to watch the footage. That leads me to believe that Craig Long would have probably been at least in his 30's to have built that kind of trust in someone who would have shown him the film. But unless his post is an anomaly, there is no cyber footprint of him on the internet the way you would expect for an avid classic boxing fan. Of course it could all be BS....

Think Stonehands should try it, its probly his best shot because he wrote the page and is a columnist on the site might work though.

When this link thread first appeared, like probably 99 per cent of people on here, i gave it virtually zero chance of being valid (and truth be told still do). But there is one thing which has me very intrigued. And this is the silence on the matter by Klompton who is nearly always quick to comment on these sorts of threads, and who from what i understand would have more interest (and ability) than anyone to get a copy of this film if it is true.

I am not sure what his silence on this means. In fact, to be honest, i am not even 100 per cent convinced that Klompton doesnt have the said or similar footage, but that is another story and to be honest none of anyones business, given recent comments that he has made.

I only raise this, because i think it would be interesting to know whether having the board chase like mad on this one might actually help some of the serious guys who have a chance at trading for it get a copy of it, or conversely, if it is doing more harm than good for these guys.

Anyway, i am interested in any comments (if any) to be made by Klompton on this thread.

I dont have footage on Greb.

Ive been silent because I just dont give it a lot of credence. Anyone can come on the internet and claim anything. If I chased down every lead that developed like this Id be exhausted. On top of that my dad is in the hospital right now with cancer so my time has been limited.

If people want to track down this Long and his story to its final conclusion great. I hope it results in something. I just have enough doubt about it that I dont really want to waste time on it. Besides Im young. Stories like this come and go, in my experience the ones that are true eventually reveal themselves and then the hunt starts.

Like the Quarry-Mathis film which I spent so much time researching last month. I basically tracked that story down to its genesis, one person, and convinced its false and doesnt exist now. It sucks, because A. I wanted to see it, and B. I spent so much time on it for nothing.

fair enough, though usually you are quick to call bull**** on these types of stories arent you. I was actually thinking exactly what you just said and thinking that if that was the case, maybe some of those who are on here could and should do the investigating and if they get close then point it out to one of the guys who might be able to trade for it. AS i said, i know you are right about the dead ends, but i imagine this is what happens with many of these things and it is only the one in 1000 ones that turn out true. Or at least that is how i imagine it would be.

Regarding the Greb footage, I note and respect your denials, and certainly have seen enough of your conduct on here to say that I dont think your integrity can be denied, so i am not coming from that angle or wishing to offend. Nor am i going to go on any type of indiana jones style crusade to uncover the truth. But i will just point out that you did acknowledge not so long ago that you expected the existence of another rare film to be kept silent. And this is because of promises you had to make to view/get copies of the film. I am presuming that if you were to ever get the elusive Greb footage, you would be bound by the same code of conduct. And your knowledge of Greb is, well to say the least, second to none.

I dont intend to press you on the issue and know that realistically, you are in the same boat as all of us, but if anyone has seen greb on this board, it would be you, and if you havent got to it by now, i doubt you will get it (though hope i am wrong, and hope even more that if you do get it, it is on no conditions). But either way, it is no concern of mine and I certainly dont want to press you on the issue any more, except to point out that when you do comment on little things such as Greb's style of fighting, there must always be that little doubt that maybe just maybe, you have a bit of first hand knowledge of what you are talking about.

The only thing that upset that theory of mine is, if you have seen Greb in action, how could you not think that Darcy KOs him quickly and brutally, he cant have been that impressive can he?:good:D

I find these hunts for lost Boxing films fascinating

Anyone know a good story relating to the finding of a former 'lost' film?

Is Harry Greb footage the Holy Grail of this stuff?

all I can say is that I don't have greb footage. if people choose not to believe me I can't help that. I wish the truth were as good as their imaginations.whether I would admit it if I did have such footage would depend on the circumstances but since there are no circumstances I can honestly say I don't have any.as for greb-darcy- refer to my avatar: greb preparing to eat darcy and carpentier for breakfast...

 luck Greb stuck to Vegemite toast instead. If hed have tried Darcy on for size we would have all been deprived of a pretty half decent boxing career.:bbb
