because those guys were unrated as heavyweights during marcianos actual career. He did not return in 1957.
Liston did not beat every single ranked HW available to him. Nor, of course, did any fighter in history. He was recognised by many as being the best HW in the world even before he came to the title, however.
Amazing that this would go 6 pages. A giant ebony god of war against a stocky 185 pound, t-rex armed, balding Italian American.
Liston absolutely cleaned out his division. Eddie Machen, Cleveland Williams 2x, Zora Folley, Nino Valdes, Mike DeJohn, Wayne Bethea, Johnny Summerlin 2x, Roy Harris...These guys were many of the division's elites, and all of them were either at/near top 10 in the world.
The fact that this motley crew of no talents and flawed fighters was the elite speaks volumes of that era.
Machen was very talented, a good fighter and a real technician. His duel with Harold Johnson proves that, and although Machen is on the receiving end of a technical shading, so was an older Charles! [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ow0ipaig94I[/ame] Summerlin, too was a good fighter, not as technically superb as these two, but still very good and talented technically. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sc0vavDS2wA[/ame] Perhaps the best of these technical experts is Folley, seen here dismembering a green Bonavena: [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXzP4F2ZEg4[/ame] Amongst the best left hands in HW history, I think! Of course, you decided long ago not to believe anything other than what you've spouted above, at least in public, and you'll no doubt spend some time drawing attention to the inevitable and universally shared flaws of these men, but maybe you're "real" self can accept what is evidenced by his eyes and even enjoy it. In that case, I'd like to accept your silent apologies for drawing attention to these fights, uploaded by yours truly to educated the fistic illiterate such as yourself, or at least what you pretend to be. I sincerely hope you enjoy.
Getting spanked by a lightheavy that old ass Jersey Joe KO'd is not going to endear me to anyone. Granted, Johnson is a great fighter, but a great Lightheavy fighter. Summerlin was durable which is about the best thing to be said about him. Durable and unimaginative. Folley did have a nice left hand, pleasing to watch skills, but was hardly a complete fighter if even a bit fragile by the time Liston got to him. Cleveland Williams...Passes the eye test and looked great against soft opposition. KO'ing Terrell was the only real feather in his cap. Otherwise faltered at the top level, tho his cause is carried on by Liston pundits. Worse yet, the mention of slugs like Harris and Jackson, who had little business in a championship ring. Listen hard.... no apology silent or otherwise.
I know it was near the end of his career(watched it on Wide World Of Sports in 1969)..but if Leotis Martin could catch him with a right hand...
You really want to qualify Jackson, Harris and Summerlin as excellent? Do I need to quote contemporary publications and the opinions they held on these fighters?
No, i'm talking about the fighters whose fights I linked (that you didn't watch). Sure, I would like that.
