i absolutely love monzon. in the top 3 of my all time faves. best middle in history. against jones though, he loses on the cards. monzon would have his moments, but jones's style of moving on the back foot and boxing with speed would be the decider. jones would use the jab and left hook to great affect as monzon looks to walk him down. as soon as jones connects with a couple of shots, he'd move out of range leaving monzon's right hands hitting thin air. jones wouldn't be able to avoid them all though. i see monzon landing enough to shake jones, but not enough to stop him.

against fighters he could close the distance on, he was a wrecking machine. against a fighter who had the speed of jones, he ends up looking a bit clumsy and ends up losing a UD.

He was probably the best pure boxer of his generation, there's not been anybody as skilled as he was since his best days left him.

At any weight below 175 he's a nightmare for pretty much everybody. Remember that he stood Virgil Hill on his head when well past his best, and Hill was an unbeaten champion with about ten defences against top line fighters.

Up until the Toney fight, Jones was primarily MW and 26-0 at the time. 23 ended before the final bell. The man had ATG power and speed. I'd give him a great chance at beating many other greats at the weight, but there was really no one at an elite level to test him other than Hopkins and Toney at the time.

 

Jones fought Toney at 168...

The only really good fighter Jones beat at 160 was a green Hopkins. Remember, Jones only had 2 title fights at middleweight (Tate and Hopkins) and six at supermiddle (Toney, Pazienza, Thornton, Byrd, Lucas, Brannon).

For a guy with a resume that limited at the weight, all this talk about him being the best is just conjecture. Sure he looked unstoppable, but look at his opposition.

Talk about hjs accomplishments at 175 all you want, that's his true weight for me.

Jones didn't come anywhere close to 'beating them all.'
