Ray Leonard does nothing for me. Harry Greb would HAVE HIS WAY with Bernard Hopkins (see Calzaghe/Hopkins). When the last round of every Olympic boxing match is a game of tag/keepaway, something's broke. Prime for prime, Calzaghe stops Roy Jones Jr. Ali, while clearly an ATG talent, does nothing for me. Also, hugely overrated, overquoted, not as witty as we're led to believe, and was the recipient of a lot of favoritism from refs, judges, and commentators in his day. Bernard Hopkins currently has next to no resume worth speaking of, but could end up on the level of Archie Moore if he keeps on the way he's going. Roy Jones was not the h2h/p4p nightmare he's made out to be. He was the beneficiary of soft matchmaking and correct timing in choosing opponents. His resume is extremely thin and his heavyweight title barely counts for anything imo. Many boxing fans (typically Floyd, Hopkins fans, etc.) are hipsters. "My guy is an artist. You just can't appreciate what he's doing in there because you don't know **** about boxing. It's some next-level ****." Guys like Hatton, Marciano, Duran, etc. are often underrated skillwise. Proper pressure/offense is an art in itself and requires a lot more than toughness and heart. It's a separate skillset but it's at least equal if not better. Heavyweight boxing is almost a different sport. Bob Fitzsimmons would be a nightmare for anyone in any era (imagine him with modern hand protection, able to swing for the fences with headshots for 12 rounds). Same for Henry Armstrong and Harry Greb. Strong matchup against any style. Jose Sulaiman must be assassinated. A British-style domestic boxing system is the way forward for American boxing. Also, would lead to a resurgence in the sport and possibly the death of MMA. 4-man tournaments should become the standard for determining the true champion of each division.
Anyone who doesn't like Ray doesn't seem like to Ali either. ...Coincidence? The same people almost always love Duran and Frazier. Again, coincidence?
Not a huge Frazier fan myself but I do prefer his style to Ali's. But I'm the kind of guy that always takes intent to do harm over intent to display superiority. I think that's the key difference for me. I'll also take Leonard's style over Ali's. I usually just find Ali incredibly boring.
People who watch Corbett-Fitzsimmons footage and then completely dismiss Fitzsimmons(and Corbett, actually) just don't get it. Their styles or why they're great. I love Ray Leonard's style actually, and hate Ali's. I don't see that many glaring similarities between the two other than their pretty boy swag and that they're comfortable on the outside above all. Elaborate please, what's your proposal?
some good ones here. also some good ones from cobra and bodhi. i'll put a few out there... seventies ali is greater than sixties ali head to head. easier to hit but harder to hurt. holyfield easily has a better heavyweight resume than tyson and lewis. maybe even combined. if duran had fought in the early part of the century, when losses were less important than wins, people would be screaming goat. people who think young foreman was a master at cutting off the ring are hallucinating.
Holyfield was the best heavyweight of the era easy (over Tyson and Lewis) Joe Louis is the greatest HW ever and top 3 P4P George Foreman is not a top 10 HW The Klitsckhko brothers would be champions in any era Holyfield should have won the second Lewis fight by decision (the fight was given to Lewis because of the bogus decision in the first fight) Roy Jones Jr would beat Leonard, Hearnes and Hagler.
in twenty years' time, holyfield and tyson will be considered a class above lewis. tyson offended a lot of people with his antics and holyfield is embarrassing himself with his refusal to retire. people will forget this and remember the good times. the lewis hype will subside (if it isn't already - a couple of years ago he was a lock for the top three).
