This has been a long time coming, but I finally bit the bullet and watched back the degale v smith fight today.
I'll be honest. I gave smith one round. Degale was supreme that night. Stuck to a well executed plan. Keeping smith on the end of a ling jab until he got frustrated and came in guns blazing getting picked off by degale.
What I also noticed is that during exchanged where smith landed, degale always finished stronger than smith.
Smith did ponder too often, thinking of a way to get inside of degales jab.
What it showed me is that smith does not have the size to carry power and speed against a good smw.
Degale showed lightening hand speed which was eventually the undoing of smith.
Smith always seemed to have an edge in speed and power at middle, and always found a way to bully his opponents at middle. Being at smw detracts a lot from his game.
Degale showed ring generalship controlling the centre of the ring for the majority of the fight, the only thing lacking I feel is power, which can develop with time.
All in all I don't think smith could have done anything to win that fight, and the move down to middle to guts of his own size is a good one.
For degale the sky can be the limit. He punches so accurately has good footwork and amazing hand speed, and can finish an opponent well. The next step is coming up against a guy of his size and reach who has the physical ability to put degale under pressure. That's the next step and when we will learn about the true potential of him.
A tough assessment for me to do, but the reality was smith losing was probably the best thing to happen to him, as it was the push he needed to go back to his natural weight class

Good honesty mate - it always hurts to watch a fighter you've got a lot of love for lose! It took me about a year to watch the Kessler/Froch fight again...

What I thought straight after the fight - Froch has been robbed there.
What I thought on second viewing - That was really close, had it gone 15 rounds Froch would have won.
What I thought on third viewing - Froch won the fight, Kessler won the match

Guess who I'm a big fan of?

You know what mate, I felt Kessler by 2 rounds, but it was a hell of a lot closer than smith degale.
I mean I can understand to a point Carl being aggrieved, but he has to accept he was fighting away from home, and such is life that's the way it goes. I don't think it's the end of the road for smith by any stretch of the imagination, I just think it was the wrong weight class. Different animal at middle imo

When I saw the thread title 'I finally did it' I hoped it meant you'd started a thread that wasn't about ..... 'Smigga'

    Sadly not

Fair and honest assesment, my only gripe with it would be the notion that DeGale has lightning hand speed. I'm just not seeing that at all.
