I never said Terrell was rated when he was stopped by Williams I said he was rated no 3, 8 months later, this was a rebuttal to you stating ," Terrell hit his stride over the next 2 or 3 years ,"actually he was world no 3, 8months later. And he was world no 3, 4 months after that when he scraped a split dec over Williams. Why cant I blame Johnannson ,wasn't he one of the parties to the return clause agreement?
I think this is a bit disrespectful here. The man was killed in the ring at only 24 years old. He was still very young. He was not off to the best start, but who knows how much he may have developed over the next few years.
Williams hurt Liston and broke his nose, twice. I doubt Johansson(if he ran) would be capable of doing damage like that. Would Johansson last longer than 3 rounds like Williams did? I highly doubt it.
Yeah, you can blame him if you want. I'm not sure when or why Terrell was rated to be honest. Who rated him no.3 only 8 months after he lost to Williams ? His results in the 8 months after losing to Williams were nothing special. Terrell was still unranked by RING magazine 8 months after he lost to Williams.
I have Ernie Terrell-Cleveland Williams II on film. I had Williams winning by 1 round. Very Questionable decision. Williams also knocked Terrell down in the 4th, it was incorrectly called a slip.
Yeah, it's a shame their third fight never came off. It was set for 1964/'65, for the WBA title I think, but Williams got shot. I do believe Williams was as good as Terrell, and far more "dangerous". I don't think much of Terrell though.
Williams beat Terrell in April 1962. 8 months later Terrell is still not in the RING magazine ratings. http://boxrec.com/media/index.php/The_Ring_Magazine%27s_Annual_Ratings:_1962
Not really. He only had 8 career pro bouts and had already beaten bert whitehurst and willie wilson. That's pretty good.
I think getting killed in the ring in his 8th fight qualifies for having a VERY bad "start" in the pro ranks.
Good fighters get killed in the ring too...Sometimes you get caught in a bad position where you receive a number of fatal blows.
whitehurst also drew with sanders!! whithurst never bothered anyone but sonny liston. Old man archie moore kept knocking whitehurst out and good old dick richardson (who wiliams was scared of) beat him by the same route as Liston did, on points. Ingo used bert as a sparring partner for the machen fight and had to beat him up for getting fresh...bert was so messed up he flunked his fight on the machen-johansson undercard against 8-9 ben wise with a draw- even though he had george gainford in his corner. wise was coming off the beating of his life against sonny liston weeks earlier and was suposed to be hand picked..then 4 weeks later burt himself recovered enough to take Liston the distance in his next fight. go figure.. maybe thats why cleveland wiliams avoided burt whitehurst?
