Ali in the 70's

I would like to discuss how good/great Ali in the 70's truly was. I argue that Ali gets overrated for his 70's resume, here is why:

In the trilogy with Frazier, the one truly convincing win was scored by Frazier. The rematch was a lackluster affair and everybody thought it could have gone either way. In the third fight, the fight was pretty much even after 14 rounds, Futch decided to stop it when Ali was so tired that he wanted to quit and perhaps wouldn't have come out of the corner. So with a little twist of luck against him, Ali could have lost 3 out of 3 against Frazier. He should have lost 2 out of 3 against Norton, Ali himself admitted he really lost the 3rd fight.

The win over Foreman was epic. Still overall I feel there were many better fighters H2H than the 70's version of Ali.

 

He might've given Sugar Joe a run for his money.

Ali is way overrated. If he's the greatest, then Sven Oktte is number two...

I tend to agree that some of fighters from "the golden age" are getting way overrated at times, but your comment are a bit harsh there

Congratulations. You've just spewed every Ali myth on these forums in one post.

 

But he didn't lose all 3 against Frazier did he? He beat him twice, as well as Foreman, Shavers, Norton x2 (a horrible style match-up), Young, Lyle, Chuvalo, Quarry, Patterson, Ellis, Bonavena etc.

You can throw stones at anyones record and try to make it look bad but no Heavyweight has a resume as good as Ali.

Its difficult to be hater on Ali when his resume speaks so many languages. People should also not forget that he was past his prime during the 70s.
