Who should rank higher on the all-time Heavyweight list - Marciano or Holyfield?

DOn't think Marciano would be able to go 3-4 against Tyson, Bower and Lewis, don't think he'd win a fight with all due respect to him. In turn I'm not sure Holy beats Walcott, I'm torn on that fight

 

I didn't think Holy would be able to beat Tyson. In fact he beat the **** out of him.

A. Your making excuses for the moorer fight. Holyfield always had an excuse for a loss. I read his biography...with Jim Thomas. A great read, but an excuse for everything. As far as im concerned, if he was ill. it was because he was having a steroid episode gone wrong. Can you imagine if Rocky Marciano was given steroids? :shock:

B. He came back when "healthy" to destroy a depleted Moorer whose confidence was gone at that point.

C. Cooper was a C level fighter who almost knocked Holyfield out! It would have been a terribly embarrassing loss for an ATG. Walcott and Moore were 10x the fighters Bert Cooper was.

Fact is, Marciano was knocked down by a MUCH lesser puncher than Holyfield was knocked down by.



Anyway... beating a out-of-prime Foreman (who would go on to be Heavyweight champ), a out-of-prime Holmes, prime Bowe, Mercer, Moorer, slightly-out-of-prime Tyson is FAR better than beating a disgustingly shot Louis, non-Heavyweight Moore, inconsistent Walcott and out-of-prime Charles.

How about Holyfield? Could he go 6-0 against Joe Louis, Ezzard Charles, Jersey Joe Walcott, and Archie Moore? I give him 5-1 at best.

Also I don't think much of the 96 tyson. He was was past his prime. Marciano has a great shot against him. In fact, I would pick Rocky at his best over a 96 tyson. Not an 86 Tyson.


I would have loved to have seen the natural 190lb holyfield fight bowe lewis and tyson. Such a shame he roided himself up.

Totally agree - Evander was given the benefit of the doubt in those days but has over time has proved to be nothing more than an inconsistant excuse maker, with his latest debacle against Sherman Williams imagine Marciano quitting with a tint scratch like that.
Evander has never accepted defeat and just gives pathetic excuses time and time again - Whereas Rocky never accepted defeat because he found a way to win

People talk a lot about Holyfield losing to Moorer but I thought he was very unlucky to have that decision go against him.
Obviously, anyone who has seen the fight can see that he was injured/sick but it's true that great champions don't need to make excuses. Everyone - Atlas, Merchant, Foreman, Joe Frazier - could see there was something wrong with Holyfield.

BUT the fact is it was a RAZOR CLOSE fight, and it could easily have gone his way.

Larry Holmes, Muhammad Ali and Joe Louis all had championship fight decisions that were just as close go their way, sometimes the judges may have favoured them when they shouldn't have.
Even Marciano had at least one non-title fight that he won on a hotly disputed decisions.

When a fight is that close, the difference between a win and a lose is like rolling dice.

So let's keep it in perspective : Holyfield wasn't decisively beaten. It was a very close fight that could have been judged for him. And he clearly had a bad night.
It was a sign he was definitely past his best.
