Current WBO super featherweight champ. Widely regarded as a bum at top flight level and was considered cannon fodder as a title defense for Roman Martinez. Burns was floored in the first by the big hitting Martinez the stunned everyone by comprehensively outboxing Martinez to a comfortable 115-112 UD.

    Great fight to watch

He has since defended it twice against decent opponents in Andreas Evensen and Joseph Laryea

I think the term tomato can is harsh for most all fighters.
You might say a guy who is 10-28 is a tomato can, but the reality is that hes a verteran of 38 fights. a guy who is 0-10 may hay oy may not be a tomato can. If he was KOd in all his loses, then yeah he may be, but if he lost 10 close decisions, than I hes not even a tomato can imo.

The answer to this question is when a fighter proves himself to be capable of staying with fighters who are highly ranked or highly regarded. They don't have to beat them (although that helps), but they do have to look like they belong in the ring with that caliber of fighter.

Carlos Molina is a good example of a fighter who has progressed beyond the point of being referred to as a tomato can.

Would you call the Mexican Indian middleweight in the 1990's who lost his first 18 bouts and went on to be a world-rated contender, a tomato can, d?
