The Ebony Dirigible, Craig Payne was a ridiculously talented performer who became the first American amateur to defeat Teo Stevenson since Duane Bobick in the 1971 Pan Am Games. He also defeated Mike Tyson in the 1983 National Golden Gloves. As a professional, the 6'2" Payne inflated up over 300 pounds to look like the adopted ******* nephew of the Montgolfier brothers. Even then, his talent extended him to a 12 round SD loss against Pinklon Thomas, and he took Barkley, Tillis and Briggs the eight round limit. He actually managed to hand the similarly huge Tongan Samson Po'uha his first defeat via knockout for his final career win.

His penultimate win was televised on the USA Network's Tuesday Night Fights, against Rocky Sekorski in his penultimate career bout, broadcast by the announcing team of Al Albert and Sean O'Grady. Albert asked O'Grady how it was possible for Payne to be able to compete with any degree of effectiveness, and Sean replied that it was a matter of being very relaxed during competition, which Craig was.

During round six, Sekorski was circling the perimeter of the ring clockwise with his hands down, well away from Payne in ring center. Rocky was facing the camera when Craig flicked out a long and seemingly innocuous right hand to the midsection. I've often wondered just how far Payne might have gone with any kind of training and dietary discipline. Ridiculous natural talent. That 12 round SD loss to Thomas was Pinko's fiftieth professional bout, but only Craig's tenth punch for pay outing, and Payne had only gone past four rounds once at the time (a sixth round knockout over Conroy Nelson). Give Payne adequate experience and even a modicum of physical conditioning, then what happens? As it turned out, this was the final win of Pinklon's career, the last in a winning streak of 13 straight, and his own penultimate bout.
