:think surely a faster heartbeat increases oxygen capacity. thus less tired.

a load of fighters have had heart murmors.

Eugene "Silent" Hairston was deaf, which led to him frequently punching after the bell and he once lost a fight due to not hearing the referee's count.

Gypsy Joe Harris and Charley Riley were blind in one eye.

The dude in my avatar knocking a peak Ezzard Charles on his can also had the same issue with deafness. He was 30-3-0 with 19 knockouts when he squared off against Lloyd Marshall in September 1945. Getting knocked down in round five, he did not pick up the count before the referee tolled "ten." In January 1947, he hit what was likely his high water mark, taking out Valentino in five (ending a career best ten bout winning streak by Pat), then scoring a ten round decision over Savold when outweighed by 24 pounds, decking the veteran Lee in the opening round. Forget the over hyped bimbo who ESPN ignorantly designated as West Virginia's greatest boxer. West Virginia's greatest boxer is this man who correctly has precisely that as his tombstone epitaph. Burt is well familiar with him, and he and I have enjoyed discussing this fine warrior in past exchanges.

Here's footage of West Virginia's very finest against one of Oregon's finest, four time opponent Joltin' Joe Kahut, in their final match over the championship distance in Portland, July 26, 1946:

L, I sure remember "The Irish Blockbuster", Fitzie Fitzpatrick. I never saw him box due to most all his bouts were waged in the West coast, but he was a hell of a puncher in a VERY tough era in the 1940s. Every fight Fitzie was in, was a WAR, much like another tough cookie of that time, Irish Bob Murphy. Irish
Bob Murphy who I did see fight, was a Southpaw Lew Jenkins ! Murphy adored his liquor and MOTORCYCLES,and that was his undoing. Fitzie
Fitzpatrick would make a ton of money today, methinks ! Cheers M.

Addendum, L. also thanks for the wonderful music of the Benny Goodman quartet, acompanying the clip of the Fitzie Fitzpatrick/Joey Kahut bout.
Today ESB may argue about the oldtimers of my youth against todays pups, but there is no arguing about todays trash music versus the BIG Band era.
    CASE CLOSED !:good

The fighters referred to in this thread with oversized heads had Acromegaly.

Others who had it were Carnera, Abe Simon, and Jack O'Halloran, a heavy from New England.

Gene "Silent" Hairston was born deaf. He was responsible for the red ring lights on top of ring posts.

I was born to be a boxer, I loved the sport.

Turns out I have the ab-normality of no co-ordination, and worse still, I found out the opposition hits you back, and it hurts!
