I really like how Martinez has one phenomenal year very late in his career, and people already forget about how average he was in the first 12 or 13 years of his career.

I don't know about you, but I do not believe that one outstanding year offsets being average for over a decade. Martinez's overall body of work does not even come close to that of Joe Calzaghe.

Plus, I am highly suspicious that Martinez is using PEDs. I mean, how does a journeyman fighter turn into one of the world's most dominant fighters virtually overnight, at that age?

Both are southpaws and neither is black so I guess given the poverty in Argentina the description fits.

"I'll never let a poor man's white boy beat me"

Martinez has been fighting at an extremely high level for a few years now. He didn't start boxing until he was 20, of course he's going to blossom late compared to so many others. For years he was building himself up into a top contender, now he's hit his peak and is rocking the 160lb landscape. There's no reason to suspect PEDs unless you're a troll.

    Pound for pound.
    Hand Speed Calzaghe.
    Foot Speed Calzaghe.
    Chin equal.
    Ring Generalship Calzaghe.
    Stamina Calzaghe.
    Workrate Calzaghe.
    Power Martinez.
Also take into account that for the point I was making size matters.

calzaghe was 36 when he beat bhop. i guess he was using peds as well. calzaghe fought no one for basically a decade. martinez's body of work is way past calzaghe's already. right now martinez is fighting on a level that calzaghe never reached.

Martinez beating Pwill, Cintron and Dzin are not better than having a very close fight with Bernard Hopkins.

Actually no, Bernard Hopkins is a greater name and fight than anyone Martinez has ever beaten.

Kessler is much better in the p4p list than either Cintron or Dzin during his prime when Calz fought him. Eubank was a much better name too. And if you see who fought who in Calzaghe's resume, a lot of them were highly ranked in the organizations and were world class, nobody just knew them because Europeans ruled that division during Calzaghe's time. Heck, even Mger was in the top 10 of the Ring at SMW for quite a while.

Martinez never fought at the same pace as Calzaghe and Calzaghe was much bigger. I'm not sure you can say he's a poor man's Joe Calzaghe.

Calzaghe was already on the decline when he beat an aging Hopkins. In fact, Calzaghe retired immediately after that fight. Plus, Calzaghe's undefeated record shows that he fought consistently at that level throughout his entire career. I will always remember him for that.

calzaghe fought jones after hopkins. undefeated means nothing. being great is who you beat and when you beat them. for a decade, joe wasn't even fighting top super middles. good fighter but not close to being great imo.

Don't see how some people are saying their styles aren't similar. Both are south paws who like to go in and out, keep their hands low and slip punches etc. Their styles are very similar. If you were looking for a sparring partner to prepare to fight one of them you'd be wise to contact the other.

ok, then where do you rank jermain taylor all-time?? taylor had 2 wins over hopkins, 3 years before joe's sd win over bhop. taylor's wins are more impressive.

arguing that calzaghe fought guys ranked high by the organizations is laughable. if i remember correctly, calzaghe only fought 4 guys ranked in "the ring" top 10 in the span of a decade. disgraceful.

Are you serious? Martinez is more skilled than Calzaghe. Calzaghe has better stamina and workrate.

It's funny how Calzaghe beat Hopkins inbetween his fights with Tarver, Wright and Pavlik and when posted a thread asking Hopkins fans who Hopkins beat who would have a chance against Calzaghe these were the only names they could produce yet they still say Calzaghe beat a shot Hopkins. Kotelnik is older than Ricky Hatton, would you say he is more faded?
