even though its not considered one of his most impressive performances is well as being very close, i was really impressed by oscars defence and movement in this fight. he never always looked so loose and elusive his trainer at the time had him copying willie pep he did fight the wrong fight against whitaker he could of made the win more conclusive by being more aggresive against the defensive master in whitaker this fight was whitakers for the taken if he had not clowned around as much. i have oscar winning by two rounds
not at all whitaker won by far and the clowning didn't determine **** it was clearly whitakers fight this is a known robbery
I certainly wouldn't call it a robbery, it just depends on what you're looking for as a judge, could've gone either way and i don't have that much of a problem with the decision. Very close fight. Was i impressed with Oscar? not particularly, Whitaker didn't have much snap on his punches by that point, just his technicality and slickess gave Oscar so many problems, Pea neutralised his jab and completely took away Oscar's left hook. Oscar fought on the front foot too much and wasn't accurate. He did finish well though.
Pernell won 10 rds & let Oscar win 2. There are rumors the judges weren't at the fight. Their scores were faxed in before the fight. Oscar was impressive, shadow boxing, as he hit very little.
I had it 114-112 for Oscar. I didn't even think it was that close until I added my card. Effective output at some point surpasses infrequent brilliance.
I had it a couple of points to Whitaker, I think, but certainly no robbery. Oscar definitely did more. I just like the cleaner connects of Sweet Pea. And considering how damn good Pernell is, I think Oscar did just fine to beat him.
Not one bit. Oscar looked awful and Whitaker did a bit more. He would fight off clinches and Oscar had no clue what to do with him. It wasn't an entertaining bout but no way did Oscar win it. The judges had ski masks and guns that night. Oscar was active but he wasn't landing much to really win the fight. I was much more impressed with him throughout the Trinidad fight(except for the last 4 rounds) & Mosley rematch.
As far is strategy and adaptability is concerned Oscar was a complete novice..one of the many bouts that proved it.
Superficially, he looked like sh!t; but I think there is a certain impressiveness that goes with beating a guy who is notoriously awkward/difficult and makes everyone they fight look bad. I do believe Oscar was a fair and square winner as well.
I had Whitaker by a point. I was more impressed by him making a prime Oscar look robotic than I was by a prime Oscar making Pea look a bit negative and toothless. Ultimately, neither man emerged with all that much credit... although, when I saw a prime Mayweather struggle manfully with a much diminished version of Oscar a decade later, my respect for Whitaker's performance grew somewhat.
De La Hoya had all the advantages going into the bout and Whitaker hadn't looked so good in his previous fight against Hurtado. The stage was set for him to have an impressive coming out party but it was spoiled by Whitaker's efforts. He was able to salvage a win but it will never go down as one of his peak performances. In fact it's Whitaker avoiding Oscar's flurries that's seen in the highlight reels instead of De La Hoya landing the punches.
No for 1 thing he was made to look foolish and for another I and many had him losing. Then lets remember Whitaker looked well past it in his prior 3 fights
Well, put it into perspective. Oscar is the only guy pre-Tito that has an argument for actually beating Whitaker. That´s quite something. It was a close fight and Whitaker made DLH look bad at times but he would do that to nearly everybody. I had it for Whitaker narrowly, I can see the arguments for Oscar and surely don´t think it was a robbery.
Whitaker looked trash in the fights preceding the Hoya one...but he wasnt the same fighter that night. He came in looking far sharper and focused...he was still clearly past his best though. Prime Pea would have schooled Oscar by a clear margin at any weight. I had Hoya only just in this fight...Even though I felt he didnt deserve it.
