Respect to the Japanese warriors. Ishida's victory couldn't come at a better time. Before the fight I was telling my friends how huge it would be if Ishida could pull this off. When it happened, I was without words. Just amazing. Hey speaking of Mexicans and Japanese, anybody remember what's that kids name who's half Mexican half Japanese I saw him fight once he doesn't fight bad at all? I'll try to look him up he needs polishing his skills, but he fights good.
Negativo senor. I can't seem to find anything of the fighter online, but he's based and born in Mexico, but of Japanese ancestry. Last time I saw him it was on a Mexican channel I want to say Azteca maybe and he was in a war in a good scrap. He reminded me of a watered down version of a Jorge Linares. Next time I see him I'll remember his name he usually has the Mexican and Japanese flags on his trunks.
Man I gotta say Ishida's jab and followup jab after the right is actually his best punch. Don't remember seeing anything like it and his left jab seems more powerful than his right. Would love to see him vs Bundrage and maybe regain a belt build some momentum and confidence. Man I'm loving 2011 the year of the underdog at least for boxing.
:good It was a great moment to watch unfold in real-time. The worrying thing about the Rigo Alvarez fight was that Ishida - who was clearly a zillion times more skilled than Rigo - allowed himself to be backed up by a fairly mediocre pressure fighter. There was none of that blitzkrieg aggression he brought from the start of the first round against Kirkland. My take is that he's a hot and cold boxer...and what a night to get hot! (and what a stage to do it on!!)
That doesn't bother me. I'm a fan of boxing period, and not along nationalistic lines. :good (for instance, all the "great american hope" hysteria over the heavyweight division just completely bores me..)
African American heavyweights do get hyped too, but...remember how badly overrated Joe Mesi got by a few delusional nuts? Tye Fields? The list goes on...when Caucasian American heavyweights come along they get the red carpet treatment regardless of their genuine world-level potential. Seth Mitchell might be the one to break the mold, though. I don't want to count any chickens before they've hatched...but he does seem to have a good set of tools.
