To be honest, I'd never attach the word handpicked to someone who is years past his best, fighting at least two weight classes above his best weight...jumping in with arguably the hardest hitter at 140lbs, who in his previous bout took arguably the #1 140lber to the limit.

    Doesn't sound right to me.

I had the British commentators to listen to, so didn't hear none of that. I wonder if maybe Khan hadn't defeated Maidana in his previous bout whether they would have made statements like that?

Morales said "I want Maidana" and Golden Boy told Marcos to take it or go back fighting bums in Argentina.

    Good enough?

    Thats not a handpick, that's a challenge.

Do you also think Audley Harrison handpicked Haye? :rofl

    Yeah, that's not handpicked.

So 99% of bouts that ever happened are handpicked now?

Um... What? :huh Haye picked Harrison over Chagaev. Morales picked Maidana over JMM. Maidana wasn't offered different options, he could either be Morales' opponent on the April 9 HBO PPV card, or go back to Argentina and build his career back up there. So in other words, Morales handpicked Maidana for his Golden Boy big fight debut and Golden Boy made the fight.

Actually, Morales challeneged Maidana after JMM walked out of the bout.

My definition of a handpicked opponent is when a boxer looks to fight maybe a weaker, or smaller, or easier opponent...a guaranteed win basically (how many gave Morales a shot?). Not one of the hardest hitters 2-3 weight classes above your best weight class.

I would call what Morales said/did as a challenge.

Who said anything negative about Morales? :huh Hello? A pick can be brave too like Hopkins picking Taylor, maybe you just used to easy handpicks over the years. But the fact remeains that Morales personally handpicked Maidana, therefore the fight happened. Is there something that is still not clear?

Exactly. Had Morales gone down in 2, then everybody would say he's shot etc.

With the result we have, now folks feel like in hind sight (always being 20/20) Maidana just didn't prepare..

Couldn't possibly be gettin' slowed down by a fighter that can ****in' bang landing clean and accurate blows on him.:!:

The word 'handpicked' in boxing, to me is negative. As my previous post says...

...a better way of putting it is, 'Morales sought out a massive challenge in Maidana.'...no?

Right. Hand picked (IMO because of how we use the word around here, usually in a derogatory sense..) is not a good way to put it.

However, according to HBO, we got the match up because EM chose Maidana. It's not that far fetched to think EM would choose to fight such a killer? I mean this is the same dude that chose to take on Pac left handed for the 12th round in the 1st fight. Even after Pac was showin him that might not have been his best idea, he stayed south paw...just because he could I guess.:p

That's on you I'm afraid. What I said is that Morales personally handpicked Maidana who therefore was offered a take it or leave back to Argentina deal by Golden Boy, and that's exactly what happened. Morales: brave pick, great warrior, legend of the sport etc. Maidana: imagine being him, fights his heart out as an opponent on a Morales PPV show, wins the close fight, and still gets a lot of smack, like fans holding their own false prediction againt him.
