Surface, as you in disappeared for 3 months than send a PM when I am not here? HA. How about Marvin Hart who defeated Johnson in a high stakes match and made Johnson punk out by playing defense? Or Battling Jim Johnson, who was but a journeyman and robbed into a draw with Jack Johnson? Wlad has some flaws. Big punchers can take him out, but he's not going to be Ko'd or floored by middles, or out worked by fighters who were viewed as tier two by their contemporaries. Nor is going to flat out avoid the best fighters out there as champion. I will give this board some credit. When I joined years ago, such a thread would have most picking Johnson. I suppose credit the film and print, and those who provided them for changing opinions.:good
This is mighty generous of you. Unfortunately ,I don't think it is returned. You are raging and ranting about Johnson again. I didn't even make a pick ! Seamus, and Janitor, are having a good exchange of views, and points here, why don't you read them? Instead of just spewing out endless bile.? You are like one of Pavlov's dogs ,ring a bell and out you come, programmed with hate, and ultimately pathetic.
with wlad and johnson in the ring together you do realise that we could all be asleep by the 4th round
Brewster and Purity weren't that big, nor did they have quick hands. I am not a fan of Wlad's style at all but the pressure that Johnson would put on Wlad in the clinches could have a big impact on this fight.
Ten months prior to being KOd by Choynski in 1901 Johnson scaled 168lbs for a fight with Jack McCormick. Since Johnson's prime weight [according to himself , was 208 lbs, when he fought Jeffries],some 40lbs more, I think this is an unreliable form line to say the least. Johnson was probably inside the light heavy limit himself when he fought Choynski.
Brewster was 6-2, 226 for his victory. That is Jeffries size. Is Jeffries no longer the giant I have always been told he was? Ross the Boss was 6-3, 250 with an 80 inch reach... and that was a green Wlad who gassed himself. Not excusable but not the peak measure of the fighter.
Actually, i'd say that a battle of attrition is something Wlad is pretty mediocre at. His stamina isn't too hot.
Some good stuff in that post. I'd go for Wlad I think. Would be really close. I think Wlad would win more rounds and Johnson would win more rounds big, making for an unsatisfactory decision and, God-forbid, maybe a rematch.
I think the flaw in this argument is that Johnson was 37 years old and in front at the time of the stoppage. And,Byrd was 35, again not prime.
