"Action-heroes" post-fight report

So, after watching Saturday night's fights how has your opinion of the fighters changed?


Maidana: Looked sloppy and fairly 1 dimensional. Casted further doubts about his power. He's now failed to put away Shot-shot Corley, Khan and a 34 year old Morales. I'm not convinced by his dedication if he can't prepare himself properly for a fight like this.

Morales: Still has that warrior mentality and maybe has a little bit more left than most of us gave him credit for. I'd rather not see him fight a Marquez or a Khan etc, but a few stiffs and then back into retirement without too much damage done would be nice.

Guerrero: I was very impressed by him on Saturday. He looked much better than against Casamayor (haven't seen the Escobedo fight). Maybe he's not suited to fighting lefties? :think Possibly a few question marks remaining about his ability to close the show.

Katsidis: Coming to the end of the road? He looked there to be hit most of the fight and struggled to land anything of his own. Personally I'd like to see him go back to Australia and have a big homecoming fight with Zappa, but it's probably more likely he will take on another tough fight in the states.

Paulie: Looked like the usual Paulie to me. I'll reserve judgement on him until he fights an actual welterweight.

Kirkland: Knocked out by the Japanese Tommy Hearns... no shame in that.

 

I think theres talk of a re-match

i loved the way put his hands and invited Maidana in for War. some glimpses of the old Erik in there, was bouncing on my bed when there was:yep loved it

Back to thread, Morales looked decent in the ring and had the fight been 6/7 years ago i reckon he would have been the first to K.O 'el chino'. He won by 1 round on my card btw...

 

Maidana: Simply woeful,His power is good but the power is a tad overrated. He digs more then anything and it's accumulation of shots that takes tool. He exciting to watch but really and truly that's not first time he's fought a old shot fighter and struggled with any form of guile. I think Matthysse is better.

Morales: Erik was brilliant. The skills were still there and that will never leave. He put up a great display and still has one or two good fights in him against the right opposition who complement him.

Guerrero: Brilliant display of boxing and looked way bigger then i'd imagine he would look. He simply outboxed Michael and it was a wonderful southpaw display. One worry...he looked very shaky after one decent assault to the body from Katsidis although he recovered well to regain control.

Katsidis: I think Michaels time is neigh. He was talking in there...smiling and looked a bit rough i really think his mind and edge has left the sport and it's totally understandable. No shame in losing to world class technicians. That's his kryptonite and is for many fighters i think he needs to be well matched now and hopefully have one more world title fight. He was heavily outboxed and i think it's time for a rest and come back against fighters who suit him. Make a few more great fights get home get a few quid then ride off into sunset with wife and child.

Paulie: Didn't see it and as Wallet said i won't say a word till i see him in with a true 147 world class fighter.

Kirkland: Saw it coming..

 

Ishida was a beeeeeeast. Still shocked to how chinny Kirkland is though.

Was Williams chinny after being knocked out by Maravilla?

 

Are you comparing Ishida's punching power to that of Martinez?

 

Wallet... Ishida had like 6 KO's in his 20+ fights...

The first KD was a glancing shot even, and he was hurt by it badly.

How can you compare Martinez's power to Ishida's?

 

We haven't seen his other fights, records mean nothing.

The fact that it was a glancing blow shows us just how much power he has.

 

True. It took Martinez 14 rounds to get the job done.

 

I wouldn't call the first KD a glancing blow tbh...he falls into a short punch that turns the head slightly.

 

Guerrero being poor against lefties?

Or maybe it's Katsidis that is?

Great performance by Guerrero, but Rios/Soto will be difficult for him IMO, let alone JMM.

Knowing Guerrero he'll move up another weight now :rofl

Kats still has some fights left in him, he's still very durable and will work hard. But I'd prefer him to take it easier, maybe Kotelnik @ 140?

Or more slug fests at 135, his tissue is shocking but he'll have a better chance in a shootout, rather than a southpaw content to use his size advantages (and very well done it was by Guerrero)

Kirkland, well I knew his punch resistance would be his downfall eventually, but not against a guy who was there to give him rounds and not hurt him. Physically, Kirkland looked horrible.

Morales deserves his chance to fight JMM, and as a purist it would round off this generatio s 'fabulous 4' nicely. However, 'El Terrible' should be kept away from those who don't compliment him stylistically. I wouldn't say Marquez does, but I think that's what Erik wants and he deserves it.

Maidana is a sloppy finisher and an accumulation puncher, and he can be hurt. But he's tough, never quits and strong down the stretch; he'll still be a handful for
most.

I mean, he had the future P4P 'King' Khan running throughout chmpionship rounds

 

He gets hit with a glancing blow, then comes off the ground, takes another shot and then falls into Koji Satos understudys shoulder and grimaced

Then again, everything about him was terrible. How did he have tear ups with Julio and Vera (he seemed shaky then but his legs didn't move in opposite directions when his opponents breathed near him)
