Sky created this problem with Khan

yeah true. i dont know how much adam smith has to do with it but i think he put his foot down on this issue

 

Definitely true and this is also one of the reasons that he lost a number of fans.

To be fair to Sky he was a huge name when he moved to them, he had consistently pulled in 4 million on ITV and I can see why they would presume that he would do at least 100-200k PPV Buys consistently.

However losing to Prescott did huge damage to his credibility, along with a few indiscretion and I don't think he has ever recovered from that, in terms of marketability and as a marquee name that is.

 

he shouldnt have been put on it straight away but if the undercard didnt fall apart the fight would still be on box office.

 

They bowed to Warren's demands on him yes but they stuck by the lad.

Lets face it...he got bombed out in 75 seconds against a unknown Colombian and the next fight up he's on PPV against ***an.

They made a decision....i respect it...let's get on with it now. Nothing can change there decision.

 

I concur. It was a joke they gave in to his greedy demands in the first place and put him on PPV. The irony is that surerly there would be more interest in him fighting McLoskey than most of his other PPV opponents? as the numbers would be swelled by his supporters in Northern Ireland?

FW is getting his own back at khan - these new PPV's with 6/7 fights are raising the bar for whats expected now.

even though he's still managing to slip some shockers onto those cards as well

 

From what i remember at the time, Warren had to push onto PPV, because it was the only way he could keep Khan under contract. Khan was asking for more than Warren could afford on the money ITV were given him. They signed a contract that guaranteed a certain amount of PPV fights, and it all went tits up when Khan got sparked in his first one by Prescott.

They had to scramble and tie the PPVs to other big fights afterwards. That's why Khan stayed on PPV for the next 4 fights (i think) but it was usually tied to another event.

Thats what I read at the time anyway, I might be wrong.

Apparently Khan was being offered plenty of money elsewhere..... at the time Warren was completely focused on Khan and would go to any length to keep him.

When he eventually left it probably did Warren a favour.... made him concentrate on his other fighters.

 

I read that it did 400,000. You just don't know with Sky Box Office, they never confirm the figures and unless it is a resounding success you don't hear rumours of what the figures are.

 

Apart from his PR which is shocking, I'd say that Khan has been very well looked after.

He'd made an awful lot of money even before getting chinned by Prescott..... I mean, he was fighting non-punching featherweights and earning some real coin - sure there were a few dissenting voices from the likes of us, but nice work if you can get it (and get away with it)

I suppose it's only in the last year or so since he won the world title that he's gone even more Bertie Big Bollocks and thinking that he's Oscar De La Hoya. Americans might not mind all that talking about money stuff, but British people think you're a twat when you start with all that.

The one thing I fail to see is why he was such a special case..... I mean, sure he was a young Muslim lad who caned a few experienced opponents in the Olympics, but he's got the personality of a paper plate and isn't ''must see'' despite being entertaining.

It was probably the fact that he was the sole representative on the GB squad and coming through at a time where there were few prospects catching the eye. Lewis had just gone, Hatton and Calzaghe were verging on becoming stars etc.

 

from what i remember the only way frank warren was able to pay khan what he wanted was by putting him on ppv.

 

Am dubious about this. We all love big undercards but would Quigg-Wright and Fury-Rahman have boosted the buyrate much?
