    Excellent post!

Even without this difference, I would say Holmes is the greater! IMO, he would have beaten Lewis.

Thats the think, people will give Holmes a free pass and say oh he was old when he lost to Spinks, but wasnt lennox "old" by 70/80's standards when he lost to Rahman? He clearly was overweight and not at his best either. But Lennox came back and beat Rahman in his rematch where as Holmes didnt.

The thing is Lennox redefined the age at which heavyweights are considered to be old, that should be a positive not a negative when rating his legacy.

Holyfield fought two of the other top guys in his era - Bowe and Tyson - when they were formidable opponents. He also never got taken out early by mediocre fighters. Lewis faced old versions of Holyfield himself, and particularly Tyson, and was taken out early not once, but twice, by second raters.

Holyfield's the best HW since Holmes. And Holmes is better than Lewis, not by a little either. Holmes had the chin to keep getting up. Once Lewis hit the canvas, the fight was over.:yep

Lennox did get up against McCall and as others pointed out, modern ref's very likely would have stopped the Holmes-Shaver's fight, particularly when Holmes was backed in the corner.

Bowe wanted no part of Lennox so you cannot fault Lennox for not getting that fight and Holyfeld was good but he was far too inconsistent at heavyweight to rank him higher than Lennox.

:good I enjoyed watching that!! I have Larry Holmes at #2 and Lennox at #4, so i'm favouring Larry but I believe that it would have been a sensational and extremely close fight! P.S on a side note, having viewed the brief clips of Vitali, and refreshed my memory of him in his "Prime", how anyone can seriously suggest that he is as good as ever is beyond me!!!

I agree. Whilst Evander is undoubtedly a p4p ATG, I rank Lewis higher than him at heavyweight. I appreciate that some may disagree but I consider Holyfield to be the greatest Cruiserweight champ ever (No-one is even close) and an ATG heavyweight but I do rank Lennox higher. Both are two of my favourite fighters.

Excellent analysis!! It would have been a spectacular fight and a close one, but i'm favouring Larry.

I remember about 4 or 5 years after Holmes got demolished by a PRIME Tyson monster, he whupped a PRIME Mercer's ass.

Mercer gave Lewis one hell of a fight.
