i voted lewis 2 years ago. now i'm not so sure.

holmes was a very dominant champ. yes he only ever held 2 belts at a time (alphabet + ring) but that doesn't tell the same story. he beat future wba and wbc champs, i'm not sure if there is any main contender he didn't face aside from maybe pinklon thomas.

i think to be fair you have to view him like foreman; two careers. his first career really should have been 49-1 beating everyone he fought and dominating for 7 years. his second career he was a fat top class challenger.

He has the greatest jab ever, including ali, liston, wlad and lewis.

That being said lewis was also great, he cleaned out his division aside from some notable challengers such as bowe, byrd and moorer. he did, however beat holyfield who had beaten bowe and moorer. but this is the thing, even though he eventually beat holyfield. let's compare the two's reign during the 90'2:

Holyfield: douglas, foreman, holmes, bowe, mercer, tyson, moorer.

Lewis: Mason, Weaver, Biggs, Ruddock, Tucker, Bruno, Morrison, Mercer, Mccall, Akinwade, Golota, Briggs, Holyfield.

Whilst lewis has more depth, it is very arguable that holyfield has more quality. lewis lost once and avenged it, holyfield lost thrice but avenged them also.

basically you can claim that lewis was the best heavy of his era, but you certainly can't claim he was the dominant champ of his era. yes he cleaned up, but so did other heavies at the same time and it wasn't until 99 he became number 1.

holmes did dominate his era, he didn't lose in his prime.

it's very hard to say who was greater. They should rank very closely IMO.

    perhaps something like

    louis
    ali
    marciano
    liston
    dempsey
    johnson
    foreman
    lewis
    holmes
    holyfield/tyson/frazier (not yet decided)

    beating

    Tyson
    Holyfield
    V. Klitschko

    Lewis.

Got to the top in a much more competitive divison that Holmes.

Beat the next big thing before retiring.

Beat 2 ATG HW boxers, and a host a good quality contenders.

Won big fights where he was not considered to be the favorite.

Fought and beat Champions in their own backyard.

I dreamt one night I watched a fight where by he was hit a couple of times by Tyson and never got up.

That said, I like Holmes and these two fighters are similar to Louis and Ali, kind of 1a and 1b, these are probably more like 2a and 2b.

Anyone who voted Lewis is either a Brit, or a fool. Either way, it makes little difference.

Holmes fought the better competition, most in their primes (not Ali), and has never been KO'ed by or even come close to being KO'ed by a mere journeymen, losing his title both times in the process. Holmes wasn't that kind of lax fighter.

Holmes is 100x more ring smart and ring savory than Lewis and would very likely stop Lewis in the later championship rounds.
Not to say the Lewis is not a great former heavyweight champion, but his reign was on the very tail end of the HW division's decline, and the competition level today shows it at it's very bottom.

    LARRY HOLMES >>>> LENNOX LEWIS

But both are great champs and Lewis is right behind the even greater former champion, Larry "The Eastern Assassin" Holmes. :good

Delusional idiots. LEnnox Lewis was a cherrypicking fraud. He waited for the best fighters to get old and/or fat (Tyson, Hollyfield, Tua, Tucker) and fought them when they were "ripe" for the picking.

Stop comparing this fraud to real champions.

    Holmes unquestionably. Shocking poll.

Lewis isn't too far behind, but is clearly behind Holmes.

One is a top three heavyweight, hands down. The other is somewhere in the top ten (where exactly is negotiable).

Oh yeah, that performance in the McCall rematch was just "brutal" he couldn't put a dent in a crack head having a breakdown, and was still too **** scared to do anything.

I am a huge Lewis fan but I rate Holmes as the greater heavyweight. Holmes has the style to give Lewis serious problems head to head, he possesses the superior jab, faster hands and had the chin and powers of recovery to negate Lewis' superior power. I have always thought Holmes would edge Lewis head to head.

Holmes was more dominant, though clearly against weaker opposition but wins over Norton, Shavers and Witherspoon are very good wins in my opinion and are highlights of a very long and dominant reign as champion. Holmes also beat a prime Mercer when in his early 40's and did so more convincingly than Lewis.

I am surprised that Lewis is winning this poll by such a landslide, he is clearly overrated by some on this forum. Lewis is undoubtedly a top 10 ATG maybe even top 5 but Holmes in my mind is simply the greater heavyweight.
