just because pac always is the faster, quicker and harder puncher doesn't mean he doesn't use his ring smarts and generalship. pac has a number of time demonstrated that he can adjust in order to win on some tough situations. changed startegy against cotto to lure him into an exhange, bombard clottey with punches to stop clottey from unleashing his fast straight jabs that troubled judah, margo and cotto. it's just that he love's brininging it on and entertain people that they see him as a mindless fighter which is in fact untrue. he has the ability to outbox his opponent and has the intelligence to do that. rememeber that he fought jmm's game at jmm's prime weight, boxing him for 12 rounds and still got a SD win.
Thank you for proving the point I made in my very first post in this thread. Instincts are not necessarily wrong, but they inherently don't require ANY intelligence at all. You don't call a flower intelligent for leaning towards the sunlight. I'd also argue that not every boxer's instinct is to backpedal, clinch or cover up when hit with something big.
He didn't outbox JMM for 12 rounds so just stop it, it was the opposite actually with the knockdowns being the difference. I will agree that his ring IQ has gotten better. But it's not close to the highest. In the Cotto fight Cotto is just a dumb fighter period. Abandons his jab and body work too early in fights. Retreats to the ropes when faced with pressure. Doesn't tie up or clinch to break up opponents rhythm I could go on and on. So luring Cotto into a brawl doesn't rank that high for a guy who fights dumb anyway see the Cotto's fight against Margo for reference.
cotto did not abandon his jab. pacquiao lured him that's why he stopped using it. pac did make cotto confident and cotto paid the price. so if cotto is dumb, what can you call cotto outboxing mosley? and about the jmm fight, my point is that pac make it even with jmm playing his game. jmm has the stylistic advantage and pac did squeak out a win. pac knows that he cannot win by rushin-in but did get the decision by boxing with one of the smartest and technical boxers in the game at his ideal weight.
Calzaghe, very few boxers have had the ability to adapt on the fly like he used to. Definitely one of his strongest attributes, really frick'in frustrating he never tested himself more!!

Your criteria for a smart boxer is one who always follows his instincts unless he's following a specific plan to not follow his instincts. That is not intelligence. In fact it's almost the opposite.
