The Metro Herald are some shower of ****s, they have a tiny piece each week on the 'Amir Khan' fight, the fact that he's fighting an Irishman seems to be an after thought. Expect a front page splash on Monday if he wins.

****en typical, have to agree with all the comments about McCloskey not being invited onto Late Late Show or Saturday Night Show. The mainstream media disect every aspect of an international rugby match and a premiership soccer match and they barely pay lip service to one of their own fighting in a world title fight in our most succesful sport.

I've nothing against other sports (not entirely true but I'm trying to sound reasonable) but the exposure they get sometimes is ridiculous

Danny Flexen gets the lowdown from the US-based Irish amateur star

GREAT TEACHER: Kavanagh has been learning from Roach and Pacquiao AFTER bagging a place on the Amir Khan-Paul McCloskey April 16 undercard in Manchester, you must be pretty excited about fighting in these islands for the first time since turning pro.
It’s going to be my European debut. I’m very excited about that. It’s also very close to home, in Dublin, so many people will be coming over. Obviously, Amir’s fighting McCloskey, which is another great opportunity for me because it’ll give me great exposure. I have a feeling they’re going to pick someone British as my opponent.
Is it better that you’ve had a chance to develop away from the British and Irish spotlight out in LA before making your European bow?
I’m 5-0 here, I wanted to start my career in America and I’m still going to base myself out here. People kept asking me, ‘When are you going to come home?’ But I wanted to get some fights behind me first then come home and show them how good I am. I’m at the Wild Card, working with the best man in the world [Freddie Roach]. I’ve sparred Manny Pacquiao and lots of other great fighters and that’s what I wanted, to push me on.
So what was sparring Manny like – did you guys go all-out?
Sparring is sparring – you’re never going to give 100 per cent. I sparred Manny when I’d had no fights, I was still an amateur, getting ready for my professional debut and it was an eye-opener to the professional game. It was a great opportunity because deep down I felt I was in there with the best fighter on the planet and I felt I held my own. I just tried to give him good work for his fight with [Joshua] Clottey and thought I did that.
He said to me, ‘You’ve got good power, good speed,’ but at the start he was saying, ‘Don’t plant your feet too much, keep on your toes so you can take the angles and get in and get out’, because that’s what he’d seen.
I sparred Amir and Manny and I think, for me – like for most people – they’re the two fastest guys in boxing at the moment. But there’s a difference – it’s Manny’s feet that are so quick that he creates space where Amir is just handspeed-wise that little bit faster than Manny. But Manny’s a much heavier puncher. I preferred to spar Amir but I was 3-0 by then, so the timing worked to my advantage.
What are the key ways in which Freddie Roach has improved you?
Freddie’s given me a lot of pointers – he’s got me sitting down on my punches more, not jumping in as much, using my jab a lot more, capitalising on my speed and bringing the best out of me. Him and Sedano Ruiz, my secondary coach who was with me in the amateurs, work closely together so they’re on the same page. Freddie’s a busy guy, so when he’s not available I work with Sedano. It’s a long way from home, and I’m very close to Sedano – he’s like a father figure to me when my dad’s not around. I live with him, I eat with him.
So who cooks, you or him, and do you have a nutrition plan provided by Freddie?
I cook all my own food, I don’t eat out much because the food out here is different to the food at home. I’ve dropped down from light-welterweight to lightweight since the amateurs, so I’m not having any problems with weight. I just stick to a plan – don’t eat greasy foods, cut the carbs out, go more towards the protein. It’s things you pick up and things I’m still learning.
So the Wild Card has great mystique but when you walk in, it is pretty basic, with two rings and a few bags. What makes it special?
The sparring makes it special and the fighters you have in it. This is the best sparring in the world. This is not the only gym in LA or even in Hollywood but it seems like everybody, from all the different gyms, comes around to spar in here. Everyone comes to get the best sparring – any champion there is, is in here. You’ll spar someone then only later you’ll find out that they’re an ex-world champion, which is great. But if you’re in England or Ireland, to spar a world champion, it’s unheard of, but here, they want to spar you, because they want to be the best and everyone’s equal. You look in the gym, there’s a lot of great talent and I’m looking at them, seeing them win and it rubs off on you, makes you want to do better and do good things.
With McCloskey from [Northern] Ireland and you training with Khan, do you have to split loyalties ahead of their fight?
No, McCloskey’s from Ireland but I don’t really know him personally, only as a fighter. I train with Amir, I’m buddies with Amir, but I have my own fight to concentrate on. Whoever wins, wins but I think Amir has the upper hand, although you can’t rule out McCloskey, because he’s an unbeaten fighter.
