what would be your hypothetical career path for ricky hatton

Obviously taking the pacquiao fight was a massive mistake so knowing what you know now and you was managing hatton what would you have changed ? i'll start

after paulie i think going for

morales (manchester Mexican vs the mexican)

barrera (think it would sell in the uk as well since they could hype it up saying about how hes the guy who beat naz)

Amir khan (would be massive in the uk)

and finally finishing with junior witter (Again probably sell well in the uk since they could hype it as a proper grudge match and but more of just finishing on a win if khan beats him)

Providing everything goes well i think the only person who give hatton serious problems is khan. Since hes probably going to be too big and too strong for morales and barrera. Some big names to add to his cv but anything would of been better than that ko he took against pacman.

anyone else got any other ideas on that ?

I still think the shoulda fought Witter. Morales & Barrera would be pointless-both guys to small.

After Witter maybe go for Bradley or Alexander & all the time build to Khan in late 2010 then retire or possibly then a shot at Pac before bowing out.

I'd have loved to see Hatton fight Gatti also on the way up.

I'd change nothing . The only guys he lost to were the best pound for pound fighters in the world and thers no shame in that . I'd like to have seen him fight Witter but it would have been a boring maul fest

 

Its all in hindsight really - the Pacquiao fight was not quite as lucrative as expected so he perhaps could have made more with a couple of interim fights before a big Battle of Britain with Khan. The negative is that he was in such a mess by the time the Hatton came around its debateable whether he would have actually have been able to successfully navigate those interim fights. So it probably worked out for the best the way it went down.

Well lets assume Pacquiaou doesnt fight Hatton May 09 but fights another top level contender and demolishes them and Hatton fights a defence of his IBF title agaisnt a Corleyesque opponent. Waits until the Summer and fights Khan in a massive superfight which is a 50/50 fight imo with Hattons pressure but Khans natural ability and Hatton being on the slide.

Assume that Pac has fought Cotto and demolished him. I think Hatton if he won would have been a big enough draw to be a viable opponent for Pac at the time he fought Clottey. Hatton would still get demolished in exactly the same fashion but probably would have earnt more and had Khans name on his record.

 

the big mistake Hatton made in his career was choosing to fight Mallignaggi instead of De La Hoya at Welterweight. De La Hoya was instead heavily weight drained and shot to pieces for his fight with Pacquiao. No doubt Ricky would have stopped him.

That fight would have generated more money in the UK, US than Pacquiao & Mallignaggi put together and he still could have done both of those fights after.

 

I guess the one thing missing from his ledger is a Lonsdale belt for keeps.

They probably held him back from the British too long, then ditched it to fight all comers for the WBU.

I suppose the reasoning was that they had a potentially valuable commodity and didn't want to risk him when the division was strong domestically.... before long it was murderer's row at world level too.

At world level.... the only names really missing are Witter (obviously), Cotto and perhaps Mosley.

 

The Pac fight was a good one to choose. He had a decent chance in a lot of people’s eye and made a big chunk of money. Unfortunately, the move to Mayweather Sr, along with his diminishing punch resistance and slack defence pretty much meant he was screwed.

Who else was out there at 140 that would have been as lucrative? He’d have had to go up to 147 again and there was no way he was coming out of that well: Cotto, Williams, Mosley, etc… all would have massacred Ricky.

I think he made the right choice taking the Pac fight then retiring. He had a good career.
