Mijares beats Rueda[VID].

I was going to make a thread on this about two months ago, when the fight was first confirmed, but it's been a bit stop-start since being announced, but now it's for definite I might as well give it a blast.

Mijares got tossed aside by most after dropping three consecutive fights- one to Vic Darchinyan, and two debateable decisions to the then up-and-coming Nehomar Cermeno- but has since come back to beat a tailor-made but still quite capable Juan Alberto ''Topo'' Rojas to start his second title reign at 115.

His first defence comes against Frenchman Malik Bouziane, who is known on British shores for besting Ian Napa relatively comfortably. In his most recent bout, the French-Algerian drew with Simphiwe Nongqayi(consequently the very man Rojas won the IBF title from before the Mijares fight), which doesn't tell us that Malik is anything too special, especially when Nongqayi's 38 years of age is taken into account, but what it does indicate is that he is at least a good opponent for El Diamante to begin his new stint with, Bouziane is a good boxer but lacks the firepower to cause the champion much trouble.

Mijares may very well be past his absolute best, but he still has a future as possibly the best at super-flyweight, the Rojas performance, particularly the third round, displayed all the qualities that made Cristian such a hot property before the Darchinyan debacle. The excellent defence, the left hand lead that couldn't be any straighter are still there, added to that he's now incorporated some well placed body shots, particularly ones to the liver(also evident in the Topo fight) and you have a fighter that's making adjustments when there isn't many necessary in the first place.

While this fight may appear ''boring'' on the surface with both being counter-punchers, don't be fooled, both are inclined to start leading when they aren't being pressured, and even if that doesn't happen, if you're one who enjoys the sweet science with emphasis on the science, you'll like this fight.

I think that the Darchinyan fight was just pretty bad for him stylistically. Vic's one of the hardest hitters ever at super-fly I think, and he's pretty awkward in terms of how he utilises his power, he's not your conventional face-first guy when he wants to land his bombs on you, he goes about things much differently, which I suppose put Cristian off a bit. That, and like you say he may have been buzzed early and not fully recuperated.

I know what you mean in terms of little responses, but I think IB already made a similar thread in the general a while ago and with Bouziane having fought in Britain before I thought it would have evoked some interest. To be honest, I don't know why people here don't know more about Mijares.

 

I've not seen much of Martinez all that much really. At least, not enough that suggests he could beat Diamante. I mean, I know Rodrigo Guerrero is extremely tough, but Raul made harder work of that than he should have IMO, I hope he has a fight in the meantime, he needs to be aptly prepared, not fighting for 9/10 months isn't going to do him any favours.

 

I suppose it all comes down to how much(if at all) Mijares has deteriorated. As I said in the opening post, he does appear to have retained most of his strengths, while adding some improved body punching, but Topo was a favourable style match-up for him. Without doubt his reflexes have declined a bit, though his blocking has always been excellent. I guess it'll take more of a pure boxer like Malik to get a real idea of how much Cristian has left.

:yep That'd be ideal. That, and the winner of Narvaez-Seda vs Mijares(victories over the other pair pending) would have me ecstatic. I hate that not even other boxing fans have much interest in the lower weights, as you can see, I very rarely have anybody to share my excitement with.:good
