Is Ricky Hatton really as over rated as some like to claim?

No you don't become a champion in 2 weight class and held on to the belt for so long by beating nobody. Hatton beat kosta tzsyu and other champions and defended the belt well before pac destroyed him.

 

thats an interesting thing to say considering the fact that ESB is 80% white european and gets hated on by the vast majority of posters on here. so are you saying everyone on this site is a black american in disguise? or are you under the impression its impossible for a white person to dislike his style? either or you're an idiot that needs to get out in the real world once in a while

 

If anything he is underrated, and one of the popular punching bags among ESB keyboard warriors.

Of the last 20+ years I would rate only Chavez higher than him, and certainly on par with Tszyu. From 05-09 he was widely recognized as the #1 140/LWW in the world. The only big fights he missed or did not make were Cotto/Witter respectively.

Make it a 30 year run and Ricky has a case for 3rd-4th best 140 lb'r (Behind Pryor/JCC/ and debatable with Tszyu...not bad for the guy many describe as a journeyman!

 

Well you can't come to general and excpect logic....c'mon mate hurry up and get back into classic. My DR. has advised me not spend more than 5 consecutive minutes in general, without coming up for air in classic or feelings of lightheadedness, naseau, and even disgust may occur.....hurry before it is to late!!!!!!!

 

I have been critical of Hatton but looking back on it the guy had a huge fan base he made exciting fights for the most part and was a two Division champion. He made a lot out of his talent. I think the hard living really hurt him towards the end.

 

Ricky was a world class l/welter. He wasn't as skillful has some but he did have skill aswell has being persistent, hardworking, with a massive heart.
It was obvious welter was too big for him but he still competed well at that weight, and losing to the two best fighters of a generation is nothing to be ashamed off.
The only knock i would have on Hatton is that in his two biggest fights, he should of been a little cuter, but Ricky knows this himself.
He is a hard night for anyone at 140lbs, anyone. Pacmans victory was special and may have happened anyway, but i think Ricky had lost a little bit of strength coming back down from welter for this fight.
All in all Hatton was a top fighter. He may of been even better if he treated his body right between fights. You gotta be half decent to bank 40 mil.

Well, Hatton has been a protected fighter for a long time. But when he finally stepped up, he did fight the best. It was a bit hit & miss then, but at least he fought the best and proved he belonged to the top of the division. Some nights he looked impressive, some nights his performance was sub-par. He only really lost to the two best fighters of this era, and was somewhat competitive against one of them (FMJ).
So yes, he was a good fighter, not overrated.

Yep , My thoughts too. Hatton's chin let him down but his hard life of drinking probably made him more fragile to punch resistance towards the end.

The guy had a serious fan base.

Hatton was very good. He was king of 140 after beating Tszyu and past-prime but still good when he got beat by Pacquiao, currently the best fighter now. He's better than what's in 140 now for the moment. Good,exciting fighter. Only lost to two of the best fighters of recent times.

 

How can he be over rated if all you people do is hate on him?
