I think that after the Norton fight,Jimmy's motivation just dropped off,big time.

That's a damn shame too, cuz Jimmy Young never really made big money as a fighter.... after his loss to Norton in '77, I'm sure Young had enough bread to vacation on, but to retire without having to work down the road was outta the question... And Young did continue to fight from 1978 to 1988 with mixed reviews and mixed results....

Ken Norton went on file saying his motivation and desire left him a great deal after dropping the nod in 1976 to Ali up in New York, but at least he still chugged forward until 1981 looking muscular and toned even when he was fighting in the mid-220s....

Norton was like 225 for Cooney.... Norton was waxed in 54 seconds, but fully buffed...

Looks like you proved your ignorance once again.

Young WAS a brawler early on in his career. He slugged against Shavers the first time and actually made a good account of himself.
As an amateur, and for most of his career he was a potent slugger.
He met two trainers in philly that changed his style completely. We don't really get to see the slugger style of Young on film, but i have pictures and segments of different fights, where Young decides to just slug.

Late in his career he went back to this style because he didn't have the dedication anymore. the best example would probably be against Bailey.

    Tommy,

Go to hell you felching grave robber..... Let poor Jimmy rest in peace without poking his dead corpse every night.... Show some class and respect for Christ sake...

Jimmy Young was no natural pure brawler looking to mix-it-up.... And if so early on, nobody cares.... He made his name as a slick and slippery counter-puncher who owned an ugly but somewhat effective style that was hard on the eyes and failed to sway the judges.... He never won the title nor made big money, but he was a descent boxer of the middle to late 1970s.... That all he was... a heavyweight contender for a few years... After that, he became a mockery of his former self by the early 1980s, yet he fought on until 1988.... DONE!!
    :bbb:deal:shock:

    What the ****?
theres no need for that ****. I know very well that young passed away. but i certainly don't "touch his corpse". There was no need for you to get personal like that, you sick *******. :finger Just accept that you're wrong. Young was certainly a brawler for his early career. He changed his style after the Shavers fight, yet still brawled from time to time.
He was a natural brawler, that was my point. two trainers from philly changed his style up
I know he never won the title, but once again, he should have. He had his shots, and he certainly got robbed constantly. Being in one of the greatest eras for heavyweights also didn't help Young.

Bill, you must be a wrestling fan. Jimmy's style was far from ugly, all fighters don't go in the ring like rocky balboa, and I've also read where Jimmy was a slugger early on, but that really dosent matter. He was a low key likable guy, usually smaller then his opponents who used his ringsmarts to his advantage. Now, many times he didn't get the decision, but his fans, people who appreciate his unique style, aren't going to go along with that. Jimmy young was an American bazaar of the highest nature. Just ask Ernie shavers, Ali, norten, foreman, Frazier whom new him Cobb who new him and many others . He was great man, judges preferences and politics screwed him man! Take a guy like Yaqui Lopez, never won the title, but don't tell me he wasn't great, know what I mean?

A prime Ali would win via 12 or 13 round TKo. I like Young alot but a prime Ali dancing and pooping that jab was a thing of beauty. I'm not saying young would not have a moment or two but Prime Ali was on another level and beats any HW ever.

Dancing and popping will only work if he's actually landing punches. Imagine how foolish he'd look doing that and missing, then being countered all night long. And don't forget, ali's face didn't hold up to well from jimmy's punches. I seem to remember a broken eardrum and cheekbone or something like that. Young was the wrong opponent for any version of ali

    Joey,

I hate WWF wrestling..... Hate it....:rofl

Of course I admire guys like Hulk Hogan and Roddy Piper and some cool characters from the old scene, but WWF is horrid....

I do respect real MMA fighters who employ various forms into fighting and make them effective....

I'm still a big fan of Bruce Lee and his style of Jeet Kune Do.... I like Chuck Norris and his Tang Soo Do karate, as well....

I have nothing against slick and slippery boxers who evade punishment, but I was never a big fan of Jimmy Young.... BUT! I do respect what he did during his heyday... But, no way in hell Young of '76 at 209 trained pounds can beat a 1967 version of Ali at a well toned 212 pounds in a 15 rounder.... No way.... Ali's offense and speed were top-notch.... Young was quick and savvy, but his offense was not out-of-this-world....

    That's all I'm saying....:deal:bbb:hat

He was negative as ****, a technically gifted spoiler.

Prime Ali would take him to school, it would be an awful fight.

I'm not denying that young would certainly get beat by Ali but he would not take him to school.

Ali wins a wide decision but looks very bad at times and does not impress. Young would have his moments.
