this is true. Why would it be a surprise that he'd take the fight in a heart beat? Of course he would. He'd be another undeserving fighter getting a payday.

Pavlik is completely off the radar. Has to rebuild himself completely, as a person and fighter. Maybe he has accomplished that as a person already, but as a fighter that remains to be seen. KP needs to batter this untested guy first, then take on a ranked opponent before he should be considered for a rematch, at any weight.

I would love to see a rematch between KP and SM! But I think Martinez fighting these guys TWICE is getting kind of old. Some posters said why not Martinez/Margarito? Although it would be a good fight I think Martinez needs to move on. Now if Kelly Pavlik is the ONLY ONE FIGHTER who can bring him the most money not named Pac or Mayweather then if I were him I would go for it.

sergio is too small to fight at a catchweight b/c if he werent, he'd have no shot at signing a fight with either pac, pbf or cotto. so of course he's going to say he can't do it. but he's come into his last couple fights right where kelly used to. he was actually pretty heavy right at the 30 day weigh in for the williams fight wasnt he? he's not too small.

however, this is putting the cart before the horse. kelly has one of the tightest teams in the business and they were saying the same things about how kelly looked prior to martinez/rehab. i genuinely feel he's back on track but he's got to show it now. there is no guarantee he would beat martinez at 166 but it would be stupid to write him off and its also a little disingenuous for martinez or anyone in his camp to say he's not big enough when he weighed 176 at the 30 day weigh the last williams fight.

If HBO has any intention of redeeming Pavlik then this fight will happen; in the meantime Pavlik needs to builtup, win his next fight and after take some 168 gatekeeper like Bika or Andrade ; this way he gets legitimacy either to rematch Martinez at 166 or fight a 168er champ.

The Martinez ship has sailed in to richer waters than the HMS Pavlik can currently navigate. As usual in this sport your judged on your last fight(s). On this basis there is currently a huge gulf between the two fighters, further compounded by the fact that Martinez already surfed/overcame the Pavlik obstacle, and given the Pavlik/Martinez size differntial, rather comfortably. Hence martinez picks up his chips and moves on to the bigger players table.
Meanwhile Kelly needs to prove that he can still play at the same table at which he has already been beaten (x 2).
Feel ambivalence as I have a feeling of a too often repeated boxing tale here.
Whilst I wish KP the best of luck, he has "worn" the best opportunity he had (given his fighting style) and moving up in weight will negate many of the advantages he had.
Seen this combination of challenges too many times, the odds are stacked against him. Of course if KP suceeds against all the odds - then it only makes the success all the more outstanding. Unfortunately the book tells that only a limited number of the all time greats achieve these against all the odds upsets. With all the best belief in Kelly he just does not quite meet this profile yet. Of course KP can still fight, it's just a question of where he is on the curve.... I believe unfortunately that all the facts point to the wrong side of the curve.
No shame Kelly, you done good son. Huge entertainment, take stock and consider your longer term future and path. Dont fall for the short term promises at a higher weight.

I wish Kelly all the best of luck in his endeavours, and have to say that he has given me a lot of entertainment. I would advise him to be cautious and in paralel prepare for his post boxing career. Would be great to hear of a brilliant/troubled kid that once the talent ran out went on to a happy healthy future (Lennox Lewis rather than Toney/RJJ).

P.S. I think that style wise he matches very badly against all the top 168lbrs (Ward, Froch, Abraham, Johnson, Bute). But of course he would stop the feinting ***** Dirrel.

    Cheers.
    Duncanne.

Why do people keep answering the question, "What should Pavlik do?" That is not the question I ask.

If you actually read posts #1 and #22, you'll see that the question is: "Why is Martinez ignoring this opportunity to earn a career high pay day?"

Well for one thing, the payday would be much bigger with Floyd or Pac, though he has admitted that he would understand if their size prevented it. He's 36 so it was worth raising the question.

For another, Martinez has spent most of his career at 147 and 154, having only recently ventured into 160 territory himself.

And when he went there, he fought bigger guys, including Pav.

For another, he already destroyed Pav, forcing him to almost quit and made his face look like a used tampon.

And finally, Pav is no longer a player. He might be again, if he gets his affairs in order. Until then, there is little or no demand for this fight (other than from Pav and his fans.)

Kelly should concentrate on rebuilding by taking on safer opponents first and getting a win over an elite or near-elite fighter.

Then, maybe a rematch might make sense, depending on where Pavlik's weight settle best.

Has Kelly done anything on having at least a secondary trainer in there to get a different point of view because he has looked nothing like his former self. I still have a tiny bit of hope for him, but when he does nothing to help his game how does he expect to improve? It was great that Loew helped him, but he really needs to step aside and get someone else in there pronto. Arreola like Pavlik frustrated the hell out of me, at least he has Shields in there and performed terrific. If Pavlik is still a world class fighter imagine how good he might of been with a world class trainer in there. Loew is not one.

Team Pavlik should push for the rematch if Pavlik is successful in his comeback fight.

    Go for it.
