The prime Ali was so much better than Young it is a joke .. Bigger, busier, longer reach, much faster and much better conditioned .. he wins an easy decision in a somewhat boring, technical bout ...

Agreed. Muhammad would win by a comfortable margin,in a fight full of technical excellence, but little on thrills.

    Thomas,

It's your fault. You began a war of words by calling me dumb or stupid early on. I am neither of them. I just happen to own a different opinion about Jimmy Young than you do. Folks need to realize I do admire and respect what Jimmy Young accomplished. For a moment or two in the later part of the 1970s, he was damn good and savvy, but never thought of as a real great fighter... He was also unfortunate never to win some ABC belt like some 80s stars such as: "Dokes, Page, Coetzee, Tubbs, Thomas, Spoon, Berbick & Smith." I think Jimmy Young was on par with them former belt holders for sure... Granted, Young's prime was in a more rough time frame of serious heavyweights...

However, I apologize for raising hell on here with Tommy Gunn... That part is official...

    NOTE:

I'm in my 'Bronson' phase this week, so I broke out "Assassination" from '87 with Bronson and Jill Ireland.... I LIKE IT!!!

I agree with this, Ali by easy decision or late stoppage

Speed would be the key. When they actually fought in 1976,Young was faster than Ali ! Anytime up to 1974,even '75,Ali would have been the speedier one.

versus Ali I prefer Leon Spinks' chances to Jimmy Young's.

Good call. Ali's poison was always pressure. Jones, Cooper, Frazier, Norton and Spinks. The notion that he struggled with defensive boxers is based wholly on the Young fight and is contradicted by some of his other fights. But pressure fighters with high workrate made him uncomfortable on several occassions.

The thing is that you said Young was a NATURALLY defensive fighter.. he certainly wasn't. He was a slugger early on.
    I apologize as well.

It's a heavily criticized effort by Bronson, but me being a fan of his, I just go along for the 90 minute ride.... I like his Asian counterpart in the film...
