I almost never start threads, but last night I was watching an otherwise excellent episode of FNF and was continually disgusted by the pound for pound rankings in a side bar. These have become increasingly nonsensical since the days of Roy Jones and Sweet Pea, when it was pretty clear no one actually could beat those guys if all other things were equal. Here is an example: Top 3: Pac, Floyd, Sergio Martinez Donaire, JMM, Khan, near the top and at number 10, Shane Mosley ... wait for it #13 or so on the list, Vitali Klitschko. All right, I don't like heavyweights, but years of dominance, barely losing a round, and 3 below a guy who lost 10 rounds against Floyd, got a weird draw in his next match, and only had one spectacular performance in years against Margarito ... Does anybody really think if they were the same size Vitali would not put it on Shane HARD? Martinez beat Pavlik, a guy almost stopped in two rounds or so by Taylor, got a close decision, lost to Bernard badly, then Martinez goes life and death with Paul Williams and gets a great but almost flukish KO win, and he is ten spots above a guy who has been dominant against all opposition for years and years and years and years. Klitscko is eleven spots below a guy who probably is for all intents and purposes completely retired. These really are just a popularity contest. Imagine a guy with the qualities of Klitschko (he's almost as fast as maidaina already) in against Khan. Would Khan really be able to in and out him easy? The intagibles of Klitschko are great, and he has years of actual real results. I was just apalled at the obvious popularity contest nature of the p4p list.
/I have vitali in my top 10, thing is his opposition isnt all that thats why he isnt in the list by most people, even if its not his own fault
If you havent noticed the heavyweight division is abysmal these days. Thats why Kiltschkos dont get much credit for their accomplishments.
I thought you were going to say Vitali was ludicrously high at #13. He is. p4p means if fighters were all the same size who would be the best...
Vitali doesn't belong anywhere near the top 10. Winning and losing to brilliant fighters is far more significant than beating shithouses. Vitali hasn't beaten a decent fighter in a long, long time, if ever. By the way, Sky Sports list is atrocious. Vitali is above Sergio Martinez. That's just impossible to defend.
It's hard to rank heavyweights in a p4p sense. It's the only class where you can have a height advantage AND a weight/strength/size/power advantage. So it's hard to say how they'd perform in a p4p matchup.
Indeed, with a guy like Haye beïng considered the #3 in the division the Hw ranks are at an all-time low. But they do utterly dominate the division... so no matter how you slice it, that's a lot better as an over the hill ww who can't even win a relatively easy fight anymore.
what an utter load of **** that must have been? i could think of maybe 10 sports that are more gruelling than boxing, but they would not be legal :smoke honestly just out of interest what sports were ranked?
