The best PR boxer IMO is Wilfredo Gomez , JML is just another hype job , and you are very , very wrong , if you think Gamgoa will get " schooled " if they ever fight , Gamboa has the C.S.B back him up all the way , that's the real school ! Gamboa is a beast and only JML hardcore fans don't want to realise this , Lopez knows it and that's why he is avoiding Gamboa like a illness , anyway let's see how he deals with Salido tonight ......

 

Juanma looked very good in his first few championship fights, and I always thought he looked too good to be true. Even when threads appeared saying he was the real deal, and that he had it all, I tried to ask some of the boricua fans to take it down a notch, but the thing is everybody wants to believe what they're saying, so they kept it up, and when Mtagwa came along, the critics appeared just as quick as the fanboys when he exploded into the scene with the win over De Leon.

I don't think he will be Puerto Rico's best fighter. He's in his prime right now, and hasn't proven too much, he actually still looks vulnerable at times. He still has time to put it all together, but we have to see how performs from now on, and how long he can go facing top fighters and being successful.

I don't know who to put as PR's best between Gomez-Benitez-Ortiz. It's close. Gomez was the most dominant at the weight but Ortiz & Benitez were more successful moving up and have better wins.

 

Gomez was the best, Ortiz ran from Napoles and never gave him a chance at 135-140, well everybody ran from Napoles at those weight that is why he move up to WW, but this about the best PR fighter, Gomez, Trinidad-Ortiz, Benitez, you have to throw De Jesus in the mix too, Macho grew up in NY so I really don't know if we could give him the pass ( heck of a boxer, Rosario damage him a bit)

 

Him and the dude in your AV, plus El Radar, Tito, and Jose Torres ect, ect,...Juanma has a loooong way to go before he is mentioned along those greats.

 

Gomez is the best IMO. Its very hard to seperate those 3, but i would say that Bazooka was the overall better fighter. But those 3 are locked for being the best 3 to come out of La Isla del Encanto.

 

No bias as I'm a fan but I would say Benitez. He gave a better account on his loss or losses to greats(Leonard & Hearns) and beat Cervantes & Duran. It's close. I really don't know who's the best but as far as overall skills I'd go with Gomez especially prime for prime. As far as greatness.....:conf.

Juanma is good, but absolutely not the greatest... He has room for a lot of improvement. Sometimes he fights for the crowd/fans too much and loses focus. He needs to improve his defense and stop getting wreckless at times. To soon to call him the greatest PR fighter... From Gomez, Tito, Cotto, Ortiz, and the most underrated Benitez and others were much better well rounded fighters than Juanma...We will see, he does have the support and is love, but he needs to fight more for himself than pleasing everyone else...

 

yea i agree benitez is super underrated, another one that was really underrated was Laporte he only had 16 pro fights and was 21 when they matched them up with the great Salvador Sanchez, can't remember what exact round his eye was cut but he manage to complete the 15 rounds like this, he wasn't Kod then later on fought Julio Cesar chavez in a controversial decision loss and couldn't be Kod by chavez either, i think he should be given more credit for his chin and heart... he was still so unexperienced vs Sanchez that they were the same age but the commentators kept refering to him as the kid. scored an impressive 2nd round Ko vs rocky lockridge with a great right hand he was infamous for, even Gomez wasn't able to Ko him... was only stopped once in refere stoppage at the end of his career, two fights later he retired...

i still must say Sanchez was agressive he'd slowly break down his opponents with the best stamina i have ever seen, still watching that fight and others i have to say laporte was one of the fighters sanchez had most caution in fighting... some of the best stamina i have seen in the old 15round days... Sanchez and Nelson.... gomez was pretty good at 122 but had issues above that... being gomez moved a whole lot and threw alot of combos...

 

And Cocoa Kid, for that matter. Deserves a mention on any thread devoted to great fighters from PR.

 

A victory over Gamboa, depending on how definitive, might allow Lopez to be considered in the Top 10-15 PR fighters, but there have been quite a few good fighters to emerge from that island over the years. So this isn't a lock by any means, even if it happens.
