Berto got hurt badly by Ortiz's uppercut early and never really recovered from it. Ortiz was the hungrier fighter. I take my hat off to Ortiz.

I liked Ortiz's performance, showed a lot of heart and determination, however, he still needs a lot of work. He now has a belt and will be a target for others in the division due to his vulnerabilities. Exciting fight to watch nonetheless. Good showing by Ortiz, poor one by Berto.

Perhaps Berto will come back an improved fighter? Look how many people wrote Ortiz off

I did not expect Ortiz to derail Berto, but I think most of us knew Berto's time at "the top" was pretty limited.

Well, the interesting thing about this is that this is what happened to Ortiz in the Maidana fight and he took **** for realizing it. The Juanma stoppage looked like it came at a strange time, but he never fully recovered from his first KD and the fight could have ended a lot worse for him. Better to live to fight another day.

I bumped a thread where I said I wouldn't consider this an upset. Hey, gotta point out one of the few times I was right...... Seriously, I based it on knowing I'd seen Berto fight and couldn't really remember anything about any of the fights I'd seen with him. Ortiz looked good except for one lapse that got him clocked and rocked against Maidana.

He took a lot of criticism more by what he said after the fight. Sorry to say but I missed the JML fight.

Fighters saying stupid things after their first loses is not that uncommon.

Berto has always, always, always been overrated. I just told a friend on the phone: He's like a lesser version of another HBO hype-job, Jermain Taylor.

This was always going to happen to him. Just didn't think it would be Ortiz doing the honors.

yea I never thought Berto had what it takes to step up to Pacman but I didn't think Ortiz who got whooped by Maidana would be good enough to whoop Berto. I also felt Collazo would for sure be a better WW than Ortiz but sometimes power goes a long way.

Don't get me wrong I am not putting Ortiz on a pedestal he is just better than I thought he was and really I didn't think much of him.

Well a lot of people did. The odds on the fight were ridiculously lopsided. I haven't seen odds so off in awhile.

Many knew he was an explosive, but flawed fighter. I don't think any fans over-hyped Berto too much. HBO always hypes their products... it's advertising that's expected. It's just Ortiz was massively underrated since he quit. That's expected after quitting, though.

Good post -- I agree! :good

Problem for me is when people buy HBO's hype. Sure, HBO has to hype their product. But smart people dont have to buy the hype.

Berto is 27 years old and has BEEN in his prime. He's not gonna improve. What you see is what you get from him.
