WTF Khan was in worse trouble than Lopez was (video)

López was in way more trouble than Khan, good stoppage.

 

I disagree...Khan was surely hurt, but it was from basically one or two punches, in one round. Lopez was being battered from the 5th round onwards.

I DO agree that the ref could have let the fight continue...until Lopez was brain dead, which is what I guess some people want to see.

The fault here is with Lopez' corner. When he came back to his seat after the 5th round, his eyes were slits, he was completely unresponsive, and when he was PUSHED back into the ring, his legs were wobbly and his eyes barely open.

No, I'm not a doctor, but FFS what does it take for a corner to see their guy is being seriously hurt. 10 mins. after the fight, Lopez was slurring his words and still looked unfocussed.

Neither Khan, nor Gatti/Ward looked and sounded as bad during their worst beatdowns.

 

Yeah, that was definitely a premature stoppage.

Lopez's chin is still china, though.

 

Yeah, this is one of those stoppages that is completely warranted but LOOKS bad because it doesn't come at an obvious moment. Lopez is still standing, Salido is still throwing, but Lopez is f*cking done and the ref saw it. Hard to argue with really. Maybe it should have gone another 20 seconds or so, but that's it.

Lopez looked terrible in there even before he got knocked down. Feet looked slow, punches weren't sharp, got square every time he threw the left hand... wow. I'd like to think he just didn't take Salido seriously, but man, when JuanMa underestimates a guy or gets hurt he just goes into complete caveman mode.

Compared to Cotto, he's got two big problems. One, he doesn't have a smooth boxing style to revert to in a crisis, and two, his powers of recovery aren't the same. When Lopez gets hurt, he basically stays hurt. Mtagwa did it to him, and now Salido. He's probably lucky he caught Concepcion before that one went much further.

 

It looked like Lopez was getting in and out of consciousness last night when he was pinned on the ropes before the ref called the halt. I don't blame the ref for stopping that fight. It would have been much much worse as Salido wasn't getting affected by Lopez' shot and was throwing more and more bombs to Lopez who was clearly getting ready to get hatton'd.

 

I think you guys watched the same fight I did...Lopez might be damaged good now. I fear for his brain, I really do. Takes way too many head shots. Caveman, indeed.

 

Exactly why khan/maidana shouldve been stopped. If it weren't for Joe should be banned cortez maidan would have a ko win over khan

All this talk of "the Khan/Maidana fight should've been stopped" is merely butthurt talk coming from guys who saw Khan take punishment in the 10th, in the 11th and in the 12th rounds, and still Khan didn't go down, and yet Khan put Maidana down right in the first round.

This is with a supposed Glass Jaw fighter vs the guy who was supposed to put down Khan in a single punch.

My advice to you: Stop hating and accept the fact that Khan did something amazing that night, something that is, was and will always be beyond the realm of your understanding.

 

lopez took a lot of clean hard shots and appeared to be in much worse condition than khan imo.

 

this was a bit similar to the Lee V Vera fight when Lee threw the last punch.

 

BAD STOPPAGE. Despite JuanMa looking hurt and vulnerable, he was punching back consciously,. he was more hurt earlier in other parts of the fight.

 

Like decisioning a guy that 100 year old Erik Morales was a shot away from stopping?

Look, you can debate the Lopez stoppage if you like because at the end of the day it's opinion. No-one can conclusively know what would have happened if the fight had gone on. That said, I'd always prefer to take the opinion of an experienced referee looking into the fighters eyes rather than a drunken schmuck watching on tv.

But there is no debate about the Khan/Maidana one because Joe Cortez was proven right. The fight did go on and we do know what happened and what happened absolutely vindicated his decision. And I'm a major Cortez hater.
