9 Days of Shock: JuanMa's, Berto's, Kirkland's and Lemiuex's 0 GONE!

Honestly, if someone told you 10 days ago that Lemieux, Kirkland and JuanMa are getting knocked out by Rubio, Ishida and Salido, while Ortiz outboxes Berto from the canvas what would you have said? This is the most insane rollercoaster ride in boxing I can remember, jaws dropping all over the place, nobody's 0 is safe.

It took a few good days to truly digest that an overlooked veteran handed the brightest middleweight prospect his ass and a feather-fisted, smiling Japanese dropped another unbeaten KO artist 3 times in 2 minutes of violent action - and down goes Berto about a minute into the Ortiz fight and we're like "oh here we go again." 4 knockdowns and heart-fought Victor-y later, another one comes, Salido is tagging JuanMa will flush right hands and Lopez goes down HARD, early in the fight and looks hurt. Minutes and 40 flush shots later it ends and the 4th 0 in 9 days is gone.

You could feel an incredible vibe coming into Saturday's action yet nothing prepared you for what boxing had in store for us. There's truly nothing like prizefighting, anything can happen at any time, impossible is an unknown word, odds and politics only take you to the ring, once inside skills and violence are the law. I can't even imagine what Mares-Agbeko and Darchinyan-Perez will bring to the boxing fan, but I'm damn sure I'm gonna feel this great month's buzz come Saturday night.

I don't really consider the Ortiz win a big upset but then again I predicted it, won me 80 pounds

But the question is...What next for these fighters?

Juanma - Still has a huge following and could still sell-out venues in PR and NYC. Right now, I am thinking Caballero is the best possible option. Simply because they have a history of Bad Blood, Trash-Talking and an entertaining feud....both are coming off losses and should make for an Excellent fight.

Lemieux - I would imagine his fanbase in Quebec is still strong. But his problem was his team of "Match-makers". If you look at his record, it's filled with 1st and 2nd round KO's. And I just knew that once he gets taking into "Deep Waters" we would all see what he's made of. If he's team goes right back to weak match-ups and a series of early KO's...then it would appear that they didn't learn their lesson. Lemieux should be matched with "Gatekeepers of 160lbs" or some solid vets that all have the ability to make Lemieux GO ROUNDS....Derek Finley, Ishe Smith, Mike Walker...etc.

Kirkland - Should stop fighting for about a year....and get a complete OVERHAUL in Style and Technique. That Straight Forward "KILL OR BE KILLED" style is extremely exciting...but there is never a good ending for a fighter who choses to fight like that. Although I have heard that he's going right back in the ring next month. According to them (his team via Boxing Talk.com) "He needs to work off the rust".

Berto - I have seen Berto get hit before (mostly against southpaws) but I have never seen him look that weak and gassed. But I think it's safe to say that Berto won't be fighting any more southpaws for awhile. Good Match-ups...Carlos Abregu or Kell Brook.

 

0's are over rated. The best fighters in history all lost.

A loss is good for the soul and the best fighters always come back.

 

Frazier would of easily beaten Vitali, no?

Out of all the "Surprising" showings over the last weeks...
The only fight I would consider a true upset would be Salido/Lopez.
(Not because of the comp, But because the cards were stacked against Orlando)

IMO, Kirkland, Lemiuex, Berto were expected.
Morales was a bonus.

 

I'll just say what I said in the other thread. All the upsets continue to point out the obvious: Defense matters.

This has been a crazy week and a half of fights. There were a few more upsets as well besides these four. Gonzalez beating Hasegawa and Dyah Davis beating Marcus Johnson and even a few more. But of the big four upsets I'd rate them like this.

4 Ortiz-Berto This was just a mild upset. A lot of people had written Ortiz off but they shouldn't have. This was a good match up and an even one, Ortiz had some advantages in his favor. Berto was the favorite but not by much.

3 Rubio-Lemieux This wasn't quite the upset that it might have seemed but still noteworthy. Rubio is clearly a step up from some of the guys that Lemieux had been running over like Camcho and Ayala. Lemieux is exciting and still promising but coming into that fight very untested. Llike Ortiz, some were really underestimating Rubio.

2 Salido-Lopez This was a big upset, even though Salido is a good, tough, veteran, and clearly better than his 11 losses he still wasn't given much of a shot. Lopez was near the top 10 of a lot of pfp lists, at home, and looking toward bigger fights. Salido was suppose to give Lopez some good rounds and make for a tv friendly fight, not win.

1 Ishida-Kirkland No matter if you think Kirkland is more hype than not this was a big upset. Ishida was there to get knocked out, the only question was in which round. Kirkland was running over people and some who seemed better than Ishida. If you were to ask me 2 weeks ago which of these four fights was the safest pick I would have picked Kirkland.
